I saw this thread on CU and holy crap!!! https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1051306/need-advice-on-family-heirloom-coin#latest Of course, there are some questions about its authenticity... If it's real it can be worth upwards of $100k! The person wants to have this graded and if it's real it is SO worth having graded... If only I could be so lucky
it is really nice! I wasn't born into a family of collectors, or even a family with disposable income. I got 2 morgans, my ONLY franklin half, and thats all I need. A coin like that is too expensive for me to truly enjoy.
Comparing it with the die varieties of other specimens I'd say this is most likely an authentic half eagle in AU50. Not my specialty, maybe @johnmilton can chime in? That's an AMAZING coin for an heirloom though. Edit: Looks like the guys at CU have it down already
It is an 1804 half eagle. As such, it is not worth anything close to $100,000. It’s probably at the low end of 5 figures. It’s a nice coin, but the photo was cropped from a much larger photo. I am certain that it’s real, but beyond that, I won’t speculate.
