    Hi guys, if you could help me it would be great. I've been tasked by my father to identify and sell a bunch of coins that he inherited from his uncle. Now I am a complete novice at this process and am researching this coin. I have another silver Real that i've determined is definitely a reproduction but I cannot tell with the second one.

    Side 1 has the following;
    - A Crest topped with a crown with MF on the left and an 8 on the right side
    - Around the edge it says; D G HISPAN ET IND REX PHILLIP V

    Side 2 has the following;
    - two crowned circles, between two crowned pillars.
    - Around the edge it says; VTRAQUE VNUM and then what might be 1745 centered at the bottom with M topped by a O (mark of the mint)

    Any help you could give would be great, I've attached photos. photo 1 copy.jpg photo 2 copy2.jpg

    Mexico, 8 reales, 1745 is what it looks like to me.

    Thanks Walrus; would you recommend I find someone to have it appraised to determine the value or is it just worth melting it down?

    If it is real, that coin is worth at least twice its weight in silver. I'd do more research on it, and certainly not melt it down if it's real. I'm no expert, I just searched for which coin it was :)

    This is not a genuine coin to begin with. It might still be silver, but the gold paint makes it impossible to tell from the pictures. However, the relief and details are inconsistent and way off. I believe it is a modern cast novelty piece.

    Agreed, it's definitely a fake.
