absolutely no idea, and i used only the finest checking sources (ebay, google) and could find no information on this. My father brought it back from italy when i was kid, and its sort of been a curiosity ever since. obverse, http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e38/scroodgetape/kinglouisxvi1792.jpg reverse, http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e38/scroodgetape/kinglouisxvi1792rev.jpg
Hello, That's it, a kind of replica. I think a petrol company in France during the 70' gave some of them with a full tank or so. Th # 20 on the reverse sugests that this one is the 20th of the collection (clver Cucumbor). It might be funny to try to find them all in car boot sales... Cucumbor
yeah, its always been suspicious, just a little curiosity. wouldve rather had the tank of gas though.
I'm sure Ian would love to have the real thing in his collection.I've got a few of the 1792 & 1793 12 Deniers in my collection, however. Aidan.
You can rest safely in the knowledge that Ian has had a number of `real' Louis XVI ecus in his French coin collection for quite a number of years now.
That has to be one of the ugliest men ever portrayed on a coin. His head is shaped like a truffle. King Trufflehead perhaps.
I think it's the portrayal that's ugly, rather than the man. The coin was issued during the constitutional period of the revolution. I can't help but think that the bust used was deliberately unflattering. Here's one I consider to be uglier:
An imitation of the George III `spade guinea', so called because of the shape of the shield obn the reverse. Also known as the `military' guinea. Your one was originally struck for use as a gaming token.
Ian - I completely agree with you about Leopold the Hogmouth. His coins are almost as ugly as the Churchill crown.
oh my gosh.. i love it .. king trufflehead. that's better than me labeling the thailand ruler 'king foureyes' as he's the only ruler i can recall portrayed with his glasses on
Shiny Di,the King of Thailand is King Bhumibhol Adulyadej (or King Rama IX).He was actually born in America, & yes,he plays the saxaphone very well.He is a very revered figure in Thailand, which is why criticism of the Thai monarchy is frowned upon. Aidan.
Whatever coin you are talking about, it can't be the one at the start of this thread. The reverse tells you pretty conclusively that it is a modern repro. For the record here's what a real ecu de six livres looks like.
the king george III coin is really rare! $50++++ Oh and thanks Ian before i didn know how to tell fakes from reals that well
Actually, the George III `coin' shown in this thread is a brass token with current collector value of around $2 -$3.
It is actually a card counter that looks like a 'Spade' Guinea, but it is in brass instead of gold. Aidan.
