I got these coins off of Ebay because a friend of mine was in the Navy. They both have the same reverse. There is only one date on these 1893. Please help with history and identification. Thanks, Sgklee.
sgklee #1: They are NOT Coins! 2) They look like silver rounds, possibly a one ounce piece, each. If they are silver they should be marked somewhere, try the rims. Look for 900 or 925 (sterling). Hopefully they are silver, and hopefully you did not pay too much.
Based on the inscription "United States Navy Chief's Mess", I'm going to take a WAG and say they are tokens issued for some use (slot machines? challenge coins?) in the Chief's mess (that's their private gathering place and dining hall for you non-veterans) at one or more navy bases, or aboard one or more ships. The 1893 date is almost certainly in commemoration of the creation of the Chief Petty Officer rate on April 1 that year, rather than an issue date. (What an April Fool's joke that was!) Read more about the subject here.
Thanks for the help. I've looked at alot of challenge coins online and these look superior. They have a beautiful proof finish. They came in a blue velvet case and were in airtite capsules. I can't find these same "coins" anywhere online. Paid $26.00. Even if not silver very attractive and should make a good Christmas gift. Thanks again, Sgklee.
I'd be surprised if a challenge coin contained silver, given the procurement rules out there. Here's both sides of one of my favorites ('cuz I earned it) circa '94-97, M1A1 battalion:
