Good afternoon! I was wondering if anyone could help me ID this coin. It's an AE 10mm coin that looks like it has a horse/wolf/donkey/dog etc. on it, plus a star above. It's odd and doesn't really seem like anything I've seen before. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Wow is that weird -- and cool! Did it come with any description? (Findspot is probably too much to hope for.) A star above an animal (horse, ram, bull, lion etc) is a very common combination of designs throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. This reminds me most of the Cypriote bronzes with star above horse. Similar style and fabric. Except the horse on these faces left. Perhaps another type from 4th cent. Thank you all for the help. I don't have coinarchives pro, but I looked in acsearch and couldn't find anything similar from Apulia that matched. But the style looks very similar. Unfortunately the AH didn't provide any info with this coin, just Greek Coin lol. It very well could be a lead tessera. There's a crescent under the person on the obv, I wonder if that does indicate he's draped/curiassed too. It looks Punic to me or even Sicilio-Punic with Hercules on the Obverse. On the Reverse, the horse is shown standing on a ground line, which is distinctively Punic.
