Second coin is a Roman Republican Serrated Denarius, ... I believe it is: Ti. Claudius Ti.f. Ap.n. Nero. 79 BC AR Serrate Denarius Bust of Diana right, bow and quiver on shoulder S.C before Victory in biga right, carrying wreath and long palm CXXIII below TI CLAVD TI F/APN in exergue. Crawford 383/1; Sydenham 770; Claudia 5.
I think the first coin is: Sear #1144 SICILY, The Mamertinoi. After 210 BC. AE Pentonkion. Laureate head of Zeus right / MAMERTINWN, nude warrior in crested helmet advancing right, with shield on left arm & long spear in right hand; P in right field. Calciati 40/1, BMC 25ff; SNG Cop 458. Can someone else please check this?
This is the ID I came up with except I do not think it is correct. According to your attribution "CXXIII" is not present. Instead it is A.LVI and I can't seem to locate this. I'm still looking though.
I found the same type of coin with the proper ID for sale on Vcoins. However, it has the same reference: Crawford 383/1: [h=2]ROMAN REPUBLIC - DENARIUS - ROME - TI. CLAUDIUS NERO - VICTORIA IN BIGA[/h]Obv.: Diademed bust of Diana right, bow in bowcase over her shoulder. Rev.: TI CLAVD TI F / AP N; Victoria in biga holding long palm branch. Cr 383/1 3.0 gm; 17 mm very fine http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/git...us_nero__victoria_in_biga/143007/Default.aspx I'm still not convinced.
Well, I suppose Crawford 383/1 encompasses several numbers including the OP coin. Here is another with even a different number: http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/luc...ad_ticlavdti_fapn__clxiii/410982/Default.aspx Bottom line: I am supposing that Crawford 383/1 is the correct reference.
A little background on the RR coin: Ti. Claudius Nero was the grandfather of the emperor Tiberius. I have not been able to determine the true meaning of the obverse and reverse types, but I found where it has been suggested that the reverse type of Victory may allude to the successes of C. Claudius Nero, an ancestor of this moneyer, and his victory over Hannibal for which he received a triumph. According to CNG, the numerals on the reverse are "control numbers"
I could very well be wrong but the obverse style is kinda off/crude to me compared with others (wreath and eye mainly, the beard also is not as well defined as others I've seen, somewhat "anarchically" engraved) Wind, you're a Yolk Noodle :foot-mouth: (Serious, I'm not familiar with the YN acronym :thirst.
