I have a client that is asking for an identification of a german coin. Here is the info I was provided.

Trying to identify this coin (?):

    German? dated 1609

on one side heads of two people and round the edge:"IOHAN GEORGE ET AUGUST. - FR-ED.S hr"

on the other side, figure with a sword and around the edge: "CHRISTIAN T(?)IDG SRI - ARCHIMEELO"

    Any ideas?

Without a picture, or at least the diameter, it can't be pinned down, but check the illustrations starting on p. 716 of the Krause 17th Century volume, 2nd Ed. for silver coins from 1/4 thaler (KM#8, ~29mm) to 2 thaler (KM#17, ~50mm) , and see which one your client has. Values start at VG $30 for the 1/4 to XF $1,250 for the 2.

BTW - The 61 German States - Aachen to Wurzburg - occupy 522 pages (out of 1272) :D in the 17th Century Krause volume!

The inscription "Iohan Georg et August frat. et duces Saxon" means "Johan Georg and August, brothers, Dukes of Saxony". The historical note at the beginning of the Saxony listings (p.707) lists Johann Georg I and August as joint rulers from 1591-1611. I have no idea what the rest of the inscription means, and it isn't listed in Krause.

FYI - the key to finding the coins was the listing of inscriptions at the back of the book.[IMG]
