Group, Can anyone help me ID this coin? I got it in one of those you-clean-it lots on ebay. More for my own curiosity than anything else. Most were junk, well all of them really, but at least this on has some design features visible. I sure would appreciate any info on this poor excuse for a coin. Thanks, Fred
Ancient Coin Brighter Here's another pic with a little more brightness, and yes, I paid more then .50 cents...$2.00, but you live and learn. Fred
Totally wild guess, but I'd say it's a VLPP issued by Constantine I or one of his heirs (or a couple other emperors). It looks like the bottom part of the altar these coins have on the reverse, but like I said it's a totally wild guess as I can't really make anything out for sure. Here's a page about them... http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/sis/sis.html http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/asstVLLP/asstVLPP.html
Ancient Coin - Constantine? Brian, After looking at the websites from you last post, I think you are correct. If fact I may have narrowed it down via visual inspection to the pics attached. What do you think? Fred
I think the X style altar fits, but those were done on more than one VLPP variation. I don't think there's enough detail to know for sure which ruler or mint yours is from.
Anemicoak. You might have to leave coin talk forum because you're getting too good at this stuff. The reverse of this coin definitely fits, not only the X on the altar but in the enhanced pic,you can see the whiplike thing on the right which matches exactly.I also think you're right that it isn't Constantine I, but one of his heirs of similar name (assuming it's the same guy as on the one Fred found) Good Call!
Try avoiding dealers who hype up alot, the honest ones who'll give you give coins at fair prices don't need to advertise "gold" or "silver" (usually non-roman salted in), their customers know what they're getting: good Roman coins.
It was my first (and last) time ordering one of these lots. I did it more for curiosity then anything else. Before this the oldest coin I had was a 1737 Russian Denga. I never really looked at the ancient coins before, but I've sort of got an interest in them now, so I'll look for better pieces. Fred
Once you get yourself something like this you'll decide to skip the uncleaneds (at least I did). If you do decide to try more uncleaneds I can get you the names of a few reputable dealers. For me I'd rather buy one or two really nice coins. I've ever had much luck with uncleaneds.
Brian, As you may have noticed, I'm getting some better quality coins for my ancients. I am currently buying a silver Ptolemy II around 250 B.C. or so in VF shape. I'll post pics if you're interested, upon arrival. Fred
Dumanyu, Yes,please post the pic when you can.I have no silver Ptolemy II but I do have one bronze with a really great portrait of Zeus. I believe the silver drachms have Ptolemy himself on the obverse.
