I was the winner (or at least high bidder) of a group lot from CNG today. I thought it would be a fun experiment to see how I do with it as only about half the coins in the group were pictured. For now I will show the seller's photo and description and update with my own photos and thoughts when the coins arrive. Any thoughts, guesses et cetera on how you think I did are welcome and encouraged. 395, Lot: 632. Estimate $300. Sold for $400. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee. ROMAN. Imperial. Lot of eleven (11) mostly Roman bronzes. Includes: Claudius. Æ As // Nero. Æ Quadrans // Antoninus Pius. Æ Sestertius // Marcus Aurelius. Æ Sestertius // Lucilla. Æ Sestertius // Commodus. Æ Sestertius and As // Postumus. Æ Sestertius // Galerius. Æ Follis // Constantius II. Æ. // Lot also includes a Celtic bronze unit. Most are attributed, with tickets. Fine to VF. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Eleven (11) coins in lot.
Well, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that it turns out to be a nice lot - the ones pictured look pretty decent. Can't wait to see the rest!
I'm guessing you did well from the post. At worst, I think you may break even on the cost. Wish you luck on the rest!!
Congrats Michael , the 3 coins on the leftside are worth alone $400 imho , with 6 Sestertii in this lot how can you go wrong ?
Cool... I think it looks promising. The Liberalitas scene is a more interesting reverse type, and the obverse of the Marcus Aurelius is very nice. I'm keen to see what the Postumus will be. Those can be worth a fair bit in decent condition, and if it's even graded Fine then it's already better than most of them out there. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the lot!
I'm crossing my fingers for you too. Looking forward to the results. Always seemed like a lot of money for a gamble but I'm stingy like that.
Thanks for the kind wishes everyone, I will keep everyone posted when it gets here. My personal feeling based on what can be seen, which is only one side of half the coins in the lot, is that if the other side of the shown coins are similar in condition on the unseen sides, then it wouldn't take much to get me over the 475.00 finish line. I am most interested in the Lucilla and Postumus Sesterii. I am not and have never been a gambler, so a purchase like this is out of the norm for me, but it is certainly a fun experiment and the downside does not seem huge.
Wow, I'm 100% positive that all of the coins will be decent ... sure, maybe the show ponies were in the photo, but again, I'm "pretty sure" that CNG is classy enough not to dump garbage onto their coin-clients => good luck, either way
@stevex6 Agree with you on CNG being a first rate auction house, my only bad experience with them ended up good in the end.
Nope, in 1996 I lost $12.00 and got seasick on some stupid boat and I still haven't gotten over it. Well, I'm over the seasickness of course, but not the empty place in my heart where once there was 12 bucks!
It's likely you'll make the 12 bucks back with this gamble, and when you do, I think you should let it ride .
I have tried to eliminate the phrase "I won at auction" because when I pay those credit cards, I don't get that winning feeling.
You got off easy. I've been in a casino once, and I lost $500. That was 30 years ago and I've never darkened the doors of a casino again.
Well, I suppose I shouldn't even try to add up my gains and loses over the years. I may get that as well
