I was wondering what this state quarter is worth?

Discussion in 'What's it Worth' started by Bigbluemax2017, Mar 25, 2018.

  1. As you can see by the pictures attached they match the description for being struck on an experimental planchet. if you check out the description on the type 4, mine is exactly like that. I'm curious as to what everyone think's? the link I'm attaching describes all 4 types. Here Is the link https://mikebyers.com/exp25cset.html i'm looking forward to what everyone thinks and I appreciate everyone taking the time to give me feedback which helps a lot.

    Thanks

I don't know, but I would guess it is a plated coin. (I have a gold plated South Dakota).
As for an experimental planchet, that would be incredibly rare, I don't see why they would release it into circulation, and since the program started in 1999, I doubt they would be using an experimental planchet in 2002.
I'm going to guess it's worth 25 cents. But I have been wrong before.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

The edge color throws me, but I've had bags of them stored away that toned with those colors.

I, too, don't think it is an experimental planchet. Those documented were from 1999 only. Besides, like already mentioned, a lot of the SQ's were plated with gold, silver, platinum, etc. so that the TV hucksters could sell them at inflated prices. When many of the suckers realized that these coins held no numismatic premium, many were dumped back into circulation. In some cases, people who found them in circulation tried using chemicals to remove the plating.

The only way you will get a hold of Quarters struck on experimental planchets these days are buying them already attributed and slabbed by the top TPGs.
Can't find them in the wild.

If it matches the description, it would be thicker than a regular quarter, heavier and have a rough edge. I don't know about the weight, but it doesn't appear to be thicker or have a rough edge from the pictures.
