    2 cents.
Not sure what you are talking about with the 1972. All I see is a worn coin
The 200_ is just the result of a grease filled die. Very common.

The COOLEST thing, from a "what caused that" viewpoint, is the vertical striations on the obverse of the 2001.

In that regular a pattern? I was thinking a real bad die cleaning/polishing. I was figgerin' the gunk filled the 1.

  8. Thank you for the help. So I dont waste my time or anyone else veiwing my post do the coins I have need to be in perfect condition? I was under the impression by a video I watched on youtube about the 72 s selling for some good money. when I was talking about the trumpet taail I was tlking about how there is that dot at the end o the s.I have another coin i'll post that sold at Heritage auctions for thousands of dollars due to the high grade. I think in my opinion the coin should grade high but I may be wrong?

I'm thinking the draw rollers created this before it was plated.

This is a 2001 Proof strike that should, in theory, be the best coin that can be made, with specially prepared dies, polished planchets, and careful striking. And yet, and yet, you can see similar striations running vertically on both sides.

Personally I think this is the result of using two metals in the coin blanks (planchets). Sure, you can roll out the sheets of metal to give a mirror surface, but the inner boundary between the outer copper layer and the zinc core may still have ripples.

At least that’s what it looks like to me.

Yes completely!!!!! There is so much stuff Youtube does not tell you. That that 72 is probably a 1 in 2.5 billion probability of finding. Finding a large double die coin worth money Well you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning , And most of the so called error coins are nothing but damage after they leave the mint, But you see uneducated folks listing these damaged coins as errors all the time on ebay and such. You want a good coin reference just get rid of all the other junk and ask here.

First of all, welcome to CT...a premier coin information web site! Members may also suggest other sites (ie, Variety Vista, Conseca, etc.) but there are 2 things you absolutely do not ever want to bring up here:

    1. YouYube - any "net" valuable information you get from this will not outweigh the enormous amount of garbage the Tubers post (I am specifically referring to numismatics).
    2. The book "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" (unless you buy it for camping to use pages as fire starter, or as......)

If you stay away from these "references" you will be OK!

Be careful getting coins graded (it would really help you to learn to grade for yourself) especially in your case since you state "I have a large container full of my dads coin collection he gave me. I would like to sell a lot". You wouldn't want to spend $30 to slab a $2 coin which you can only sell for $2!

You may buy slabbed coins if for example you were concerned about authenticity, but many collectors have a minimum threshold before they would consider having a coin slabbed (ie, $200.00).

Don't hesitate to post a coin or question, especially if you haven't seen it in the archives. But don't have thin skin when you think you see a sarcastic or side track answer. (It's sometimes what we do, it's not personal!)

Have fun with your endeavor!:happy::happy:

I've had it done twice. The hardest thing I've ever done was get in the car to go to the second one. Have you ever driven somewhere HOPING your car would break down?
