My best friends wife called me today and asked if I had any coin price books. She said she'd found 8 drawers full and jars, and bags of old coins from the late 1800's to the '70s. American, Russian, Japanese, Spanish etc. I told her jokingly, "I'll give ya a hundred bucks for some coins" . She asked what I wanted, and I told her wheat cents. She said, "I'll just give you those!". She said that there's a bunch of old coins in cardboard 2x2's, "Money with red writing on it" and all this stuff is just in her grandma's way. Her grandma said just to get rid of them, and if I wanted to buy them, that would be fine. I told her that I wouldn't sell them and save them for my kids just as she did. She said I could look and see what I want for $100, then we'll settle on the rest. No one in her family knows about coins, or even cares about them. All she would like to see is maybe double face value. I truly have found an un-searched hoard, and it's all for me!!!
If you come across any coins that you can't identify, you will have to post photos of the coin(s) concerned. Aidan.
You'd better snap that up,if it is genuine. You'd be a mug to turn it down,as they are of historical interest. Aidan.
Be really carefull----alot of those are fake---sometimes they say fake on the note and sometimes they don't....these are some I would either post some photos of here in the Paper Money forum or take to a dealer and ask. Speedy
I didnt see it yet but they brought me a roll of mercury dimes, a bunch of wheat cents, some franklin halves, silver rosevelt dimes, A roll of '76 quarters, some Ike dollars, 2 susan b's, 40's-50's nickels and some assorted "pocket change". I'm going to scan it all and post some pics later tonite or in the morning.
Mac, Just make sure that you are willing to lose your best friend before you take the coins off of his and his wife's hands at well below market prices. "Friends" don't usually rip off true friends. At least make sure they know that they might be selling you $500 worth of coins for $100 or whatever seems about right. I don't get the sense that your friends really understand what they have or that you adequately explained it to them.
Oh no, I got them a copy of the red book. I'm telling them to get a safe deposit box for the "Good stuff" and save it for their kids. But we agreed at 75% of the graded red book value for the stuff (extras) they're going to sell me. I told them I'd take what they think they'd like to sell. I dont want to see all this stuff sold by her kids if she passes. The stuff I get will be saved and never sold, and the stuff they save I hope stays in the family for the grandkids.
I don't know what a good or bad deal is but it sounds like you are doing more than some would to give them a fair deal and help educate them a little. Good job!!! and enjoy your new coins...
