I paid "approximately" 3.68 times bid for this toned MS64 Morgan Dollar

Unfortunately, I couldn't adequately capture the true beauty and intensity of the obverse color in my images.

It sure is a pretty one! :)
I think it would look better with a white background, in an NGC holder :p
Nice coin, and can't wait until Lehigh sees it! :D

OK, I see luster, I see color, what I don't see is any distracting hits, marks or scraps.

Could be the photos hiding chatter but what is keeping this out of a 65 holder?

Good observation - I thought it deserved a 65, but rather than re-submitting it, placed it with my best client.

That was very generous of you. Guess I am not your best client. :(

Very nice and interesting coin - would love to see this in hand to see what the toning looks like.

I quess the price for this coin counts more on the beautiful toning than the 1 point difference in a 64 or 65 , as we know the true worth of a coin is not always the assigned grade but the beauty of the coin itself ,

I'll be the nay sayer of the bunch, while it may be graded correctly, the color for "toners" is wrong, unless the pics just doesn't get the toning.

The colors should really be 'electric'! I bought a coin from Lehigh and the colors are almost totally different than anything I had picked up before! Sure I have a few coins that are close, but you can really see the difference between the coins in hand. Go back and look at some of Lehigh's post and you'll definitely see the difference between something that is toned and a true 'premium' toned coin.

I still like the coin tho, it's a beaut!

I bought what I think is a monster toned quarter this weekend, but I'm sure I'll get ripped a new one for what I spent, and the toning.

The toning is wilder in person, but remember, this was merely a $200 one, not a $2000 one.;)

Aaaahhhh, when I see 4x I think of a coin in the range in the mid $500's and much higher.

    Mark,

Did you ever read Ron Sirna's grading system for toned coins? This type of coin is an A- or B+ coin depending on the customer. Personally, I prefer more defined color patterns with incredible luster and will sacrifice surface preservation on my Morgan Dollars. Your coin would better suit the collector who wants a balance of color and surface preservation.

When I saw this coin on the NGC forum, I immediately thought, you sold it for 5X wholesale/bid. I was close. I agree that this is a $200-$250 coin even though I personally would not buy it.

It may be helpful to post a $2,000 rainbow toned common date Morgan so everyone has a better understanding of your point. I have never been able to pull the trigger past 25X wholesale myself. Here is an example of a Battle Creek MS65* Morgan Dollar that sold on the Island website for almost $5,000 (almost 40X wholesale).

I believe the term is MONSTER! Can you even imagine, textile toning with those colors and that luster. I am in love!

Similar to what I thought until I looked closer. In my opinion it's not chatter and hits, for there is some but not much. Instead look closely at the hair, bonnet and the tip of the wing on the left side. What I see is very light wear that is indeed masked by the toning.

I think what we have here is an AU58 coin that was given a grade increase because of the lack of marks and color. In other words, it was priced at MS64 - not graded at MS64.

I promise, there's no wear on the coin. And while admittedly, the grading companies will reward coins for attractive color, when they do so, it's usually by a point, or, very rarely, two points. I have yet to see them grade an AU coin, 64.

I trust your judgement Mark, but I have seen them grade AU coins as 64. I rather think plenty of others here have also.

But as you said yourself, you thought the coin a 65 - why else would it be in a 64 holder if my opinions were that far off base ?

Look at the high points of the hair, they are a different color and show some flatness, even under the toning. Afraid I shall have to agree to disagree on this one.

I think you might feel differently if you saw it in hand. But, in answer to your question - either I'm a point too loose or they were a point too tight. But, since I bought it for the color, the 64 vs. 65 grade didn't really matter to me.
