My friend who helps take care of the appartment building I live in told me he had some ' pennies' that he found when szome people moved out several years ago. He finally got around to bringing them to me for my opinion on what they are worth.
Well, they were not stored very well so they oxidized and started corroding. There are several if not more cents which are really collectable .....but their condition is questionably poor. I would like opinions on want might be able to be done to rescue these Lincoln cents.
It looks like the person who owned this collection was fairly knowledgable except in storing them. It could have been that he died and his wife kept these until she either died or moved which happens often here.
The collection must have been started in the late 1940's or early 50's the Whitman folders are copyright 1949. There is also an old Whitman box No. 9601 which contains 100 slots for clear round plastic cent tubes, 2 1/2h x 7/8w. The printing on the box says you can buy the tubes--- two for 15 cents any denomination. Now that's a good deal.
So here are a couple of scans showing the condition of the cents. And the are five partially full Whitman folders are like this. One of them is for Indian Head cents and they are in the same condition.
The numbers on the folders are 9003, two 9030, two 9004.
Pictures to follow because I have to resixe them.

They just look like old, worn, Lincolns in a Whitman folder to me; No glaring out of the ordinary environmental impact.

The first thing I would do is pop the coins out of the album and check the wheat heads to establish a baseline grade of each, then work up (or down) the grading diagnostics.

You said that there were some key dates in these. Do you have any pictures of those and what dates were they.

With the possible exception of the VDB, I see nothing yet that is worth even $1 and that is assuming that they are not corroded.

You guys got it right. After looking more closely I found that there are no key dates. The '22D' was another ' 23' , and the '24d' was a '26'.
Otherwise they are just common everyday circulated Lincolns and not very good ones at that. There is what I would call environmental damage. Some cents have a case of verdigras while most have that filmy, rusty look to them. It does wipe off but there goes what's left of the small value the folders have if you wipe down all coins.
I apologize about the ''key dates'' statement.
Besides the two 1909 VDB's there is a tube marked " 1960 small date". I really have trouble with ID'ing these so I'll post them next. Thanks a lot.

That's hilarious! :goofer::goofer:Yeah, in fact it did along with my recovery disk. That, I discovered, had a virus. Try and do a full recovery without one when you can't even get F11 to work. So thanks for the chuckle. I needed it.Kiss

I've looked at that so many times and yet I still had a hard time. The guy who had this collection must have had a hard time too. I believe he started the for folders in the fifties. There are three tubes full of 1959s.
The four Whitman folders are copyrighted 1949 without any previous copyright date/s.
I guess he was a casual collector like me but my folders have 98% AU or better. And I known how to protect them as well as all my other coins, mint sets, and commems.

If you get the two together and really look at them, it will become obvious. Unlike the 1970-S, there really is a difference between the 1960's.
