Hey guys, I hope that everyone is having a good day. Okay, so I've read listings on Wexler's site and seen people on here refer to double die coins having this little bitty thing that I still cannot seem to understand: NOTCHES. Based on the thousands of pictures I've looked at, notches (to me) appear as very small pieces missing off of numbers/letters on a coin or very small dots that appear on the edges of numbers/lettering. I'm still asking myself, "What do I look for" and "How do I know what I'm looking at if I find them". Someone more knowledgeable of this particular subject referred to notches the other day looking like, "Slashes through the coin". Okay, so does that mean that I should look for pieces missing on the corners of characters on the coin? These pictures that I'm posting may or may not have anything special about them, but it's the particular year that I've been looking at today. 2009 pennies. As always, any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated. (The pictures posted are of 2 P mint Formative Years cents)
I'm not the doubled die specialist, but I don't see any doubling or notches in your great close up photos.
2009 1¢ FY WDDO-001 Description: Strong notching shows on the upper left corners of the letters in LIBERTY. Extra thickness shows on the lower hair and beard details. Light extra thickness shows on the 20 of the date. So what is this supposed to be? Like I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm not talking about mistakes that are completely obvious (looks like the mint workers got plastered) and I am well aware of doubledie.com (use it everyday).
2009 1¢ FY WDDO-002 Description: Slight notching shows on the lower left corners of the ERTY in LIBERTY. Strong extra thickness shows on the lower hair and beard details. Light extra thickness shows on the date with a notch showing on the underside of the top left of the 2 and on the bottom left corner of the 2.
Let me help a little bit here . One notch is a doubled die . Two notches is a tripled die . Three notches is a quad die .
When you get into hunting for Doubled Die varieties you need to have a lot of experience in searching for these tiny issues such as notching.. It's a bit frustrating since some are more obvious than others. That's one of the major reasons I don't bother with Doubled Dies.. In my opinion it's not worth it..(for me) But members such as @Rick Stachowski specializes in Doubled Die varieries because it is a true interest for him!
Am I really the only one that has trouble understanding this? I'd like to think that I'm pretty intelligent and well rounded; but if questioning listings like the ones above makes me an idiot, then I don't know what smart is supposed to be. It makes me feel like giving this up altogether when someone criticizes me for wanting to learn or is more worried about my grammar than the question itself that I need help with. If you're going to take shots at me like I'm incapable of human comprehension and spell check my posts, then just forget it. Thanks, but don't bother trying to help.
Notches are formed from mostly letters that are doubled, but off-set slightly. There are also split serifs from letters being doubled. Maybe this will help.
Okay, that makes sense. I understand what a notch is now. I was not aware that there were tripled and quad dies, so I just learned three new things. Thank you for clearing that up. So Rick, these listings on doudledie.com, on their description it says: "Strong notching shows on the upper left corners of the letters in LIBERTY" (1st pic) and "Slight notching shows on the lower left corners of the ERTY in LIBERTY. Light extra thickness shows on the date with a notch showing on the underside of the top left of the 2 and on the bottom left corner of the 2" (2nd pic). Stuff like this is what I'm having trouble with... I don't understand what would make either of these doubled.
@JSparrow1220 I have been collecting for 70 years and I have a hard time understanding all these anomalies. Personally, I think they are so subtle that they should be irrelevant. But, they are part of collecting these days so I need to keep after them. Good luck with yours.
Thanks Inspector43, I appreciate that. I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks some of those listings are crazy. I've got to take a break from this for a while... That paddy guy set me off and I just can't get into this right now. It's frustrating enough not understanding something and trying to learn without someone making you feel ignorant for asking questions.
I also gave you 4 other posts with lots of help.. I actually was just trying to help you. I am so very sorry. I will never bother you again.. Peace
Compare the photos from posts 5 and 6 to those you've posted of 2009 coins. Remember what I was saying in a different thread about single squeeze?
I was the one who mentioned "slashing" as appearing as a notch. This came about with the single squeeze hubbing as opposed to the old notching we are used to and presented above. Here is a 2014P with the slash/notch at the 1 in the date. Also notice that the doubling is completely different than what we used to know. Rather than the usual spreads of numerals and letters there is more deformity.
I understand both the frustration of the attributes and what seem to be short answers. Most people on this board are volunteering their experience and don't intentionally insult or judge. But, sometimes a short answer may not be phrased as well as it should be. Sometimes you get several short answers that need to be linked together as the person reporting keeps re-thinking the answer. I'm not an expert even after 70 years of collecting. Sometimes I will get an answer that seems to be a challenge to my 'old-timer disease'. I know they all mean well. If you take time to avoid incidental misunderstandings you don't have time to help. Keep in touch and keep after your dream.
