I need beginners help

I'm considering starting collecting ancient! Can anyone give me some starter advice or refer me to a resource that can?

The ancient field is so big, you're probably better of to get a copy of Sear Roman Coins and their values to get an idea of what takes your fancy and budget. What type of ancients have drawn you to want to collect?

 

Ancients are great! Jump in, the water's fine!

Everyone here would like to help so feel free to ask questions. Also search what you budget buys here and you can get a bit of an idea what different budgets will buy.

 

What do you recommend to start with? I don't want to pay more than $35 per coin. I would be more specific on what I prefer but I don"t know what to prefer!

My biggest piece of advice is to start in an area of history that you have interest in. You like the Roman Empire? Plenty of affordable coins in the 5 good emperor time period. Like Greek? So much variety and interesting designs.

I would recommend reading up on the historical period you are interested in and capture a coin that speaks to you. You will love collecting ancients. Welcome.

And what about Sears Greek Coins and Their Values and Sears Byzantine Coins and their Values? These might also tickle @Mike Drop fancy. I think perhaps it's best to look at some retail websites and Coin Talk and other ancient coin sites before buying a reference book focused on Greek, Roman or Byzantine coins. Even the general reference books aren't necessarily that general - often focusing on one or the other. A better book start might be Wayne Sales book Ancient Coin Collecting Vol. 1, or Klawans' book Ancient Greek and Roman Coins. These are cheap, broadly-focused, general introductions for the beginner.

 

Because at coin shows ancients are not up front or in the well lit areas.

Those are fine areas to collect. Understand the ancient Egyptians did not mint coins until the Ptolemies showed up.

I think it refers to the dark (i.e. Less trafficked) side of coin shows where the ancient dealers set up.
