Hi again all. I have this one old very worn colonial here for you to look at. I do have a pretty much OK collection of coloninal coins and i know what most of them are. But this one has me stumped. You cant see that date at all in the scan and you really cant see its date at all in person either. Its from 18?? SOMETHING. What tiny bit thats left of the date is under the bird and half penny token above the bird. Under a X10 loop it looks like it says 1813 0r 18 of center a little. But that is really a guess becuase there is close to nothing left of the date. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA? This is one that I unearth a few years back in MA. http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l...rrent=Scan10049.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch3 http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l...rrent=Scan10049.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch3 http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l...ent=Scan10048-1.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch2 http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l...ent=Scan10049-1.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
Looks like it might well be a English Penny Token possibly one of the Walthamstow types but not 100% certain of that. De Orc
I found out. Randomly after years of looking . lol some one is selling one on ebay . I have looked on ebay for one to compare it to for years, and today out of now way i find this .lol This copper halfpenny token was struck in Great Britain for use in Canada. It can be found in Withers’ British Copper Tokens 1811-1820 under reference Non-Local 1712, where it is noted as rare. According to Withers’ these tokens were in fact overstruck on Bristol Patent Sheathing Nail Manufactory halfpenny tokens. They were then imported by a Boston merchant who settled in Montreal in 1813. The token’s obverse bears a spread eagle holding four arrows in its right claw and an olive branch in its left. The divided date 1814 appears on either side of its tail. The legend reads “HALFPENNY TOKEN”. The reverse bears a seated Britannia holding an olive branch in her right hand and a trident in her left. The design is contained within an oak wreath. The edge of the token is centre grained thus /////.
