bronzes! Yup, big bronze coins! My primary "thing" is 5th-7th century AD but I enjoy obtaining from time to time bronzes from the earlier Roman Empire. An acquisition from awhile ago, I was able to score this Lucilla sestertius for around $9 after shipping (Bing's spidey sense must be tingling right now!). To jog peoples' memories Lucilla was wife to Emperor Lucius Verus and sister to Emperor Commodus (the crazy guy from Gladiator). She was executed for plotting against her brother. Lucilla, Roman Empire AE sestertius Obv: LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right Rev: IVNONI LVCINAE, Juno seated left, holding a flower & infant, S-C in ex Mint: Rome Ref: RIC 1747 4.5 mm thick! (ok not huge but still!)
That's one helluva coin for $9! I have a few pics of this sestertius in hand, just to freak out the collectors of moderns... "Shouldn't you be using a glove?" "Do I look like Michael Jackson?"
Lovelly Lucilla! and for just 9 bucks?? The whole world must have been asleep to let this happen! Good for you, though I must say...Lucilla seems to be sniffing a little cocaine
VK you make me look like a spendthrift. Very god score and a great pond skipper. Man, don't drop that thing on your foot, if you know what I mean. LUCILLA Æ Sestertius OBVERSE: LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right REVERSE: VESTA, S-C, Vesta standing left, holding palladium and sacrificing with simpulum over lighted altar to left Struck at Rome, 161-161 AD 30.4 mm, 21.89g RIC 1779; BMCRE 1178
For real $9? That's awesome. That requires 9 beavers......!!!!! @John Anthony - that Sestertius looks so gnarly.
Wow Jango, sweet addition ... man, I am definitely a chubby-chaser as well!! LUCILLA – SESTERTIUS 148-182 AD Diameter: 30 mm Weight: 25.9 grams Obverse: LVCILLA AVGVSTA draped, diademed bust right Reverse: IVNO / S-C Juno standing left with sceptre, peacock in front
