i was jst sitting down to search some rolls of 5 cent pieces and came across a full mixed roll of jefferson nickles. what dates or marks should i ,look for that are more desireable? thanks
For starts, look for 42-45 with a mintmark above the building on the reverse. Those are war nickels and have silver. I also keep anything prior to 1960 simply due to the fact I like them. Also where most of the varieties are. Not much to go off I know, but hope it helps. edit: You posted while I was typing LowFlying. I also keep any S's that jump out at me. Always lower mintage and down the road you never know, Thanks!
Anything 1938-1959. Keys for those years: 1939-D 1942-PD&S 1943-PD&S 1944-PD&S 1945-PD&S 1950-D Also 2009's and 2010's. Not many made. They are kind of expensive, and VERY overrated: 2009-P&D 2010-P&D
This is great info as I too have a lot of older Jefferson nickels to go through, and will look for specific dates.. Side note: FWIW I have been saving all my Jefferson nickels regardless of date. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, they are our only current standard minted coinage that is worth more than it's face value. Metal wise they're currently worth almost .07 cents each and that will surely rise when the feds change the metal content similar to the modern 1 cent penny. I've been 'lightly' (draw your own conclusion) hoarding nickels for about the last year, as I'm guessing they could at least double in value when they are changed at the mint in the near future. Whatever the case, I'm confident I won't loose any money for the small investment and time. - Plus I can find a few oldies in the process. It's a win-win IMHO. Just my .02... (plus .05 currently)
