OK heres the story so far. For some reason I still buy the so-called UNSEARCHED wheat cents from ebay. Going through the last two pounds that I purchased this popped out. The weight is right, the color seems ok but I just can't imagine that it would make into a $10.00 auction. So the question is, Do you think its real? I'm just not sure about the mint mark. Something doesn't look right. Please be as brutal as needed. Thanks
if the color is accurate then it has been dipped or recolored. the mintmark sure looks to "chuuby" to be good to me. Sorry, but I doubt it.
Sure worth finding out. Stranger things have happened. I can imagine a seller tearing his house apart looking for that 1909-SVDB he KNOWS he has. If you can start with a dealer (free opinion), then you can decide whether to submit to one of the TPG's.
It looks real to me, but I'm not a very good grader or anything like that. Occasionaly one of those do make it into the lots, or so their feedback says. But who is to say that all of that feedback is real lol. However, if you want to know if it is real or not, send it in to get it graded and certified. That will let you know for real. If it isnt real, then oh well, you'll only be out of the money it cost to get it certified. If it is real however, then congrats!
That would be nice. Is the VDB left of bottom center on a real one? That is all I can tell from pics.
I don't think so, but can't really see the mm too well to see if correct for year. The offset initials on rev really counts against it. Jim
The more I look at it the more suspect I am of the mintmark. It just looks Squished to me ( not the technical term I'm sure ). The rest of the coin looks really ok. I've compared it to two of the VDB's that I have on hand and that part looks good. Is it possible to fake the mintmark and if so how would you go about it. As for taking it in the closest dealer is over 60 miles away I wouldn't be able to get there until this weekend.
These photos need more resolution, plus the need for a close up of the Mint Mark, over Lincoln's shoulder and of the V.D.B. Or you could just send it to NGC, PCGS, ANACS for autheniticity. Coin like this is worth it.
>That would be nice. Is the VDB left of bottom center on a real one? That is all I can tell from pics.< I thought that too, but I checked a pic of a real one online and it appears that the VDB really is left-of-center: http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cents/lincoln_cents/wheat_ear_cents/1909s_vdb_cent.htm But the resolution of the picture is really way too low to tell anything at all. It certainly looks like it *could* be genuine, but impossible to say either way for sure. In any event, it is definitely worth getting a professional opinion the next time you're at a coin show or a reputable dealer.
Yes, the VDB is left of center. However, it is not a good pic, but the "B", at least, looks to be too far to the left.
We need better pics. These pics are way too small to make out any details. Like others said, the MM looks suspect and the color is wrong. You never know but I HIGHLY doubt it is genuine.
The only thing I can see that looks off is the S, the VDB looks ok to me. Get us some larger pics, we can tell you for sure.
If this proves to be real, it would be the first I've ever heard of such a coin found on e-bay unsearched hoards. Please keep us posted!
Odds are, it isn't completely authentic (meaning, real coin and added mint mark) but nonetheless, I figure if you are buying unsearched rolls on Ebay, you don't have a 09-S VDB so it will fill that hole until you can get a real one, so that alone makes it worth something. However, I'm hoping it's real. That would be way kewl! Please keep us informed! :thumb: Ribbit
