My dad has a $100.00 bill that says payable to bearer $100.00 in US gold.......Also he has a $1.00 stating payable to bearer as $1 in US silver. Are these rare, and what would be a good estimate of thier worth? I appreciate any responses. I'm just trying to find the info for my father....Thanks in advance.

    will do what i can

I will try and get pics and post them. What would you guess they were worth? Does the $100 bill mean its payable in gold? Thanks for the help. I'm glad I found this board .

Is was payable in gold when issued, but when I was just a lad the US went off the gold standard, Americans were prohibited from owning most gold coins, and the promise to exchange gold certificates for gold was renigged on. :(

Many years later the promise to exchange silver certificates for silver was also renigged on. :( :(

Without seeing when they were issued and what condition they are in, their value could range from a slight premium over face value to hundreds, or even possibly thousands, of dollars, so any reply to your question about their value would be pure unadulterated guesswork.

Roy,I think you mean 'reneged' on,or for want of a better word, welshed on.

Meeeeelee, what you have got there is a U.S. $100 Gold Certificate, which sounds like it could be a scarce note. The other note is a U.S. $1 Silver Certificate. Most of these are pretty common. The notes are listed in the Pick catalogue, which is also known as the 'Standard Catalog of World Paper Money',which is a bit of a misnomer as some countries' notes are polymer plastic.

    meeeeelee:
Look at the notes, 1) we need the signatures, bottom left & right (eg; Woods/Mellon)
    2) what is the series? for example: 1953 A (for a silver certificate).
Good luck, hope that you have a fortune.
