When I saw that it atleast had a date I couldn't pass it up. I am thinking about finishing it or making it a pocket piece. It's kind of odd how one gets a feel for weight by the size of the coin. This thing just feels heavier. It's not 26.7g. It's the size of a Barber half and 4 times as thick. The pawn shop had $34 on it and I asked him what his best price was. He said 20 I said no tax. He said ok.
Is that a 1922? My old eyes can't quite make out the date. Neat piece, raises a few questions. Why did someone do this? And if you carry it 40 years as a pocket piece, will it look normal again? I like odd stuff like this.
The last digit is a 3. I looked for a MM couldn't find one, the area is a little beat up and curled. I liken this piece to have been beaten against a round piece of metal from the way the edge looks. Maybe an old jail peace. Knocked against the bars for passersby and a way to kill the time.
Could it be an unfinished project of making a ring by tapping the edge a coin with a spoon, eventually cutting out the center?
It was spooned but with a hammer and not a spoon. or spoons. We used to tape 2 or 3 spoons together to add more force to make the process faster but the edges are too rough for a spoon to have caused that damage.
I think this one was done with a finger behind it. Yeah a spoon would be a waste of time. I am open to the thought of a hammer.
