Some people use metal detectors and have done quite well , but a good metal dector isn't cheap , you could also trade things you no longer want , but there's an old saying you get what you pay for , meaning to get something good you have to give up something good . Another good way is to buy the Cherrypickers Guide book and go through your pocket change looking for errors . rzage
Well you could try roll searching. You may find some Lincoln wheat cents or Jefferson nickles from the forties and fifties. Also you could roll search for half dollars and maybe come across a 1964 silver Kennedy half or if your lucky a Benjamin Franklin half. Lou
Chance of getting "old" coins in change are slim, though I picked up the merc that's my avatar that way (about a year ago). There are some good stories of CT members picking up some silver while roll searching, but chances are still slim. Another good way is to ask some older friends or relatives if they have any old coins they might have saved from long ago. I hit a "gold mine" that way many years ago (I think it was 1955) when my uncle gave me a box of mixed coins, mostly 1800's. And then there was that jar of Barber's and Walkers my wife remembered she had. So... you might just get lucky without buying!
Talk to older people at garage sales. Often, they will give you one or two because they don;t know anyone else who is interested in coins. And keep an ear out. You can hear the difference in silver coins.
Welcome to CT, I do remember highway 99, and Fresno. Spend a few years in Merced a long time ago. Finding rolls of coins? Well the best source is going to be banks or stores. Many people are rolling up coins they have at home. Ask around to friends and neighbors. If you offer to do the counting and wrapping for them, you'll get first chance at looking for old coins. But first you need to know what to look for. Buy a coin book, it's worth it. Look for 'A Guide Book of United States Coins' 2010 edition. It's by RS Yeoman. Have fun
As said roll searching, metal detecting but, As said roll searching, metal detecting but, you still have to buy the rolls and the detector - it's kind of hard to know what you are asking - the only way I know to get coins without buying them is to inherent them or someone gives them to you.
Well they have covered find them, roll search, inherit them, and steal them, then you can always try the Chinese method and make them. I'll stick with buying them.
......you might find old coins in rolls but while you are looking through rolls, check them for some of these. http://www.collectorscorner.org/pocket.html
Nice site... I'll pass this on to our junior club we sponsor.... they'll enjoy this information.... :loud: :high5: Thanks!!
I get rolls from the bank every week, search them, keep AU coins, turn them in and start all over again. I got a silver Roosie a few weeks back. I'm been looking for 40 years but have never seen a Mercury Dime in circulation. Good luck.
