Many years ago as I was rooting through a pile of coins to update my whitman folders. I came across a Washington Quarter 1991 with no mint mark. So I plugged it into the spare slot in the folder book. Now this is a coin from circulation. I was just wondering if others have found coins with missing mint marks. First photo is at an angle looking for shadow of the mark.

There was a big to-do about these with the 1989 date but it fizzled out. Philadelphia had trouble striking the coins up well enough to see the MM's and this affected a lot of '88 to '91 issues with the '89, perhaps, being the most dramatic.

I'd certainly hang onto it but it's just curiosity now days.

I also have one of the quarters that I found several years ago. I put it in a two-by-two and put it away. My coin came a group of quarters but is not "circulated".
I found this site after being interested to see if others have found one and maybe why there is no reference to it any where. I also have also found one of the 1960 double "D" cents. I see that it is not quite sought after but is a little interesting.

I think these might get more attention if there were a means of identifying the specific die that produced them. This would probably involve dies state or some specific die damage. Modern dies look a lot alike so it's difficult to be sure each of the no mint mark examples were even from the same die.

You found a pretty good site. I hope you have a lot of fun here and stick around.

Now I realize that their are way tooooo may will disagree with this post: I have one of those quarters. My sister works in a medical lab. Under a microscope, there is absolutely NO MINT MARK on the Quarter. Period !

I have one too. My dad indicates it "came out of a new roll of quarters".

1991 no mint mark is from the Philadelphia. I have some too as i'm collecting them all Washington quarters from 1965 to 1998 regardless of their condition as long as both sides are still readable. They are not worth anything more than their face value. But I'm sure another 20 years they will be. They are getting phased out as the state quarters and national park quarters are being pushed. In two years, we will see new quarters showing women on them. Happy collecting.

Robert, since ALL 1991 quarters are supposed to have mintmarks on them, how do you know a 1991 no mintmark is from Philadelphia?

Wikipedia. I maybe be wrong and it could be from Denver. It doesn't matter to me because there is no mint mark.

I just checked my inventory and I have 11-1991 no mint mark.

  14. In 1991 the no mint mark Philadelphia quarter was known by coin dealers. The coin dealer I worked for at the time bought lots of quarter rolls to try and find one. I was luckier. While driving home on the Dulles Toll Road in Northern Virginia I reached into my pocket to pay the toll, saw the no-P mint quarter in my hand and saved it, using a different one to pay the toll. I still have it. They are rare, but they do exist. Mine was found in 1991, virtually uncirculated in terms of condition, and there was no tampering as I had it professionally checked out. Always check your change. You might find something cool.
