I checked out the local B&M today and got what I think is a pretty good deal. I picked up a 1914 half sovereign for $115. That's basically melt plus $6. That was the total cost, no tax etc. I'd say it was a good deal. Coin is nicer in hand than in the pics. Some rubs on the high points makes it an AU I guess. What look like nicks etc in the pics aren't there in hand. Clean fields, great eye appeal, just no luster on the highest areas. I compared it with a few others and this was the nicest. I chose a George V for the nice 'stache It's also a nice short run of dates with no expensive pieces (except the proof) that I could work on assembling if I decide to. Next time I buy a gold coin though I think I'll try and get a 1914 dated piece from another European country. Probably another one involved in the first World War. Would make an interesting theme of sorts. I also got the other coin pictured. It was 30% off the marked price, so $7.70. (just realised I cropped the marked price off :/) Unfortunately it's not the medal allignment variety. Still a good price for a real nice looking coin. Opinions?
