This is a first for me. It appears to be a copper planchet (pre-82). Went to mail an ebay sale, and got a nice gift returned to me in my change. I know its only worth a few bucks, but it is the most significant error I have found in circulation. The fact that it circulated for so many years is surprising. Anyone here ever find one in circulation?
Before you get too excited, answer one question for me....... Does the planchet have an upturned rim? If it does, then it is easy to prove that it is a planchet, but if it is just a blank without the upturned rim, you'll have a hard time proving it. Chris
I wouldn't believe you, but I have found a couple of cent blanks and a dime blank doing roll searches. I think it is curious that nobody even noticed until I did.
Yep! Its got the rim....Here are some pics. Again, its been well circulated, which is the most surprising aspect of this find.....no one pulled it from circulation in a number of years.
You'd be amazed how few people actually look at the coins they get in change, keep in their pockets, purses etc.
Very true....my guess is a very small fraction of people would even know what this coin is and how it came to be. Just about all coin collectors would know and would pull it from circulation.
