So after 17 years of collecting off and on I finally decided to join the A.N.A. today. I hope it's worth it. If anyone here is a member I'd like to hear your experience. Thanks.
I did it simply because I wished to further the hobby, and they help lobby for collector's rights. The Numismatist is an alright magazine. It makes for light reading, and interesting tidbits to pick up about various collecting areas. Some of the other benefits can be nice, like low cost coin insurance, NGC privileges, and the like. I joined about every other organization, so why not the ANA?
Welcome to the ANA. I have been a life member since 1986. My biggest benefit of being a member has been attending Summer Seminar several years. I increased my knowledge and understanding of coins exponentially at Summer Seminar. Now that I have moved from Colorado Springs (six miles from ANA headquarters) to Georgia it will be more difficult to attend but I hope to continue (just not as often).
How is the magazine's ad to content ratio? I mean, it's not one of those magazines that has 4 to 6 pages of ads for every one page of article is it?
I would say 50/50 or better. The ads in there are not like NN of CW, they are simply advertising the dealer's name, more like the Celator has. A classier publication, and it should be since its a magazine and not a newspaper. They throw ancient collectors a bone and have one column a month in there for us.
As a life member I welcome you. I'm sure you will find the ANA useful if you take advantage of the resources it has to offer.
I joined ANA a few months ago, after 5 years or so of collecting, the last two years being fairly serious (I come here every day).
There are some real benefits In my experience, some tangible benefits include: Summer Seminar & correspondence courses NGC associate membership (coin submission privileges) The Numismatist Magazine The lending Library Occasional free admission to shows Others may have mentioned insurance & shipping benefits but I have no experience.
That's one of the three primary reasons I joined as well (the other being access to Hugh Wood, and direct submit via NGC).
I've often thought of joining just for the library. Right now I'm just paying dues to too many other places.
Think I need to join as well. I want to take their distance course, not to mention the other benefits.
