I've been collecting for 32 of my 38+ years, and while I've had some reasonably valuable coins in that time, I've never owned a gold piece. Until now. I've recently started working on a certified AU-58 type set. And in so doing -- as I sold other coins to raise money -- I found this one. I've had bigger acquisitions by far, but somehow, this one feels huge to me. GOLD!! I finally own a gold coin!!
Congrats ziggy !! But man - now ya gotta be careful for you have taken the first step onto what can be a verrrrrrry long road. You think collecting silver coins can be addictive ? Oh boy howdy - you just wait pal. There's just something about those little gold doo-dads
That is a beauty Ziggy. I bought a $5.oo gold coin a few years back with the clad I found metal detecting. They are such cool coins. Congrats to ya. Jim
oohhh...yummy! The only gold I own is a proof 1987 constitution piece. It was inexpensive and beautiful so I bought it! Iwould love some early gold though....yum...!
Who was it who warned me about catching the gold bug? (Oh yeah, several of you.) Anyway, I guess I caught it because here's another one (like the first one, graded PCGS AU-58):
OK, you've got the Half Eagle and the Eagle. Now you just need a Quarter Eagle, a Double Eagle, and a Type 1 dollar, and you'll have a set of Liberty Head gold. (- the Stella, of course)
Shiver me timbers... You start with cents (as most of us did) and then one day you think, "Wow...those Morgan dollars are sure purdie" and you start adding silver to you collection. You hear commerical after commerical talking about owning gold and rare investment coins...so you peak at the gold coins at your favorite coin shop thinking, "How am I going to explain this to my wife?" (thank God I don't have to deal with her anymore). Is that how it happens to most of us??
All that glitters is GOLD. Ziggy, I really like your webpage. A very nice way to showcase your collection.
Thanks. I originally was just planning on having a place to remotely store good pictures for insurance purposes. But as I was doing that, I thought it might be fun to do a little more than that -- to "showcase" the pieces I have, to show the pieces I still need (in case anyone has any for sale) and, history buff that I am, give a little history lesson to tie these coins into events that were happening around the time the coin was being struck.
