So last night I sold a bicentennial clad proof set on a face book auction page. Guy BINs it for 7.50...like almost immediately. He pays me this morning for it and then sends me this facebook DM "...hey keep me in mind on deals like that because I need coins like that for toning experiments...thanks again" Ugh...this just feels so wrong
If you feel that it is wrong for him to experiment with artificial toning, then tell him that you would prefer not to do business with him in the future. Even if he recanted, I wouldn't trust him. Chris
You pusher I wouldn't read too much into it. Alot of us do it. Doesn't mean we're doing it for profit though. I would casually ask him what he's up to. Play interested and see where he's coming from.
I've experimented with proof and MS coins doing everything I could think of or heard was done . This was for me to learn what certain things like MS-70 did to copper . I recommend every collector do this as I heard it from a top member here when I joined . It's a great education . BTW I've never sold any coins especially ones I've messed with .
It's not at all like providing drugs to an addict. You're providing them to the dealer. But what are you going to do, not sell at all? Can't stress out about what the next person is going to do with them.
This. If you haven't experimented yourself, how can you ever be aware of what to look out for? I've done every combination of dips, sun, heat, DD, MS70 etc. and may do a write up with pics on what these do.
Unless you're the only guy holding such sets (har, har) it's not going to matter what you do. With that said though, and just reading between the lines of what he said, I'm going to guess this fellow isn't the type anyone needs to worry about. I've heard many similar type things over the years, and when announcements are made, it's usually from guys with big ideas and little knowledge looking for a payday. I say sell away....
I'm taking a chance at posting this here, I do not know if he is a member of the forum here...I highly doubt it as he'd have probably been run off by now... Agreed, but I'd rather not be told what's gonna happen...ignerntz is bliss This guy ain't tryna to learn...trust me Conversation between us on FB me: Toning experiments? Are you ATing coins and then selling them? him: I tone coins for dealers and wut they do with it is there biz...lol..but basicly its a way to restore cleaned graded coins...it removes the cleaned grade when its regraded me: Interesting, so dealer sends coin in for grading, comes back with details grade (cleaned) and artificially toning them can help disguise that cleaning, then they resend in for grading? him: yeah for example a dealer yesterday cracked open like 5 grand in slabs that came back as cleaned...he gives em to me I remove the cleaner and then tone em...if you tone them without removing the cleaner your tone will be red...so I take the coin back to square one give em whatever kind of tone they are looking for and then they regrade with a different service and they just come back with an au or ms grade...my toning is chemical free so they pass like 9 out of 10 times me: Crazy, how are you removing the cleaner? him: Acetone mainly, some coin dip can be a bit challenging tho me: So how are you toning them...primarily heat? him: Yep Then he sent me examples of his work
Phew. Had me worried for a moment that this guy actually knew what he was doing. I'm not worried any more.
With all this AT going on I almost see one day where blast white coins will become the minority and THEY will be the ones commanding a premium - better start putting some silver coin rolls away and hope to live long enough - LOL!
He's working with/for all these dealers, yet has to go on Facebook to purchase a set that many dealers are up to their noses in? Sorry, ain't buyin' it.... Oh, and his, "work" leaves much to be desired...
I agree with you actually...which brings me back to my original feeling of....why must he hurt my coins...ehem...his coins now If only there were a cliche that would sum this being damned if you do and damned if you don't business
You took the words right out of my QWERTY books. These are horrible and every big 4 tpg will agree. Plus if he was able to get 5k in coins straight graded he should have made at least 10% ($500) on that one deal, no. So him wanting deals for coins at >$10 is plausible but not probable. Mix that with his crappy results he touts as tpg passable and this guy is a big fat liar pants All this said, with his mindset give him a couple of years and he might just get there
And he is supposedly buying clad coins (the 76 proof set) to practice toning silver coins (all the coins that were imaged)?
