Hi everyone. New here. My wife's family was french living abroad. When she was young she was given a piece of jewelry with a coin inset into it. I believe it is an old French gold coin but I have no clue. My eyes suck and I can't quite make out all the words on it. I will show 4 photos I took which is the best I can get. I seriously doubt the wife will sell it but it's always nice to know the value of something. Thanks
I can't quite make out the writing but the crest on the reverse suggestd somewhere more germanic. Some words I can make out are LOD. ?? REX A A HVNGER. BOHEM. GAE?which would be ? king of Hungary, Bohemia,? Can you see a date on it? Hope this helps some Richard
It's Austrian. Most likely dated 1915 (I think I see that). Those are restrikes and really only worth bullion value. http://www.taxfreegold.co.uk/austria.html
Hi, thanks for the quick replies. I should have made a better effort to read the text with a magnifier before. This is what I get: Face = franc*ios*id*g*avstri?? imperator Back = lod ??L rex a a 19?5 hvnga? bohem*gal? I am pretty sure the unknown number is either a 1 or some other number with a single line coming down from the halfway point. Since we know the coin is older than 1970 that leaves either 1945 or 1915. It looks more 1915ish. I have no clue what a restrike is. Can you explain? And assuming bullion value only that means since it is about (guessing) half an ounce it's worth about $500-600. Which means my wife can keep and still wear her family heirloom If it had been the missing piece to a billion dollar fortune worth a million itself I am afraid we would have had to sell
I apologize. I should have followed your link before responding. Yes - it is a restrike like you link shows. And it appears there is far less gold there than I thought. OK, a trinket the wife can keep. Thanks so much LostDutchman.
