Can someone please explain it to me. Why would people bid so much money for a counterfeit coin on ebay? I mean I know fakes are bought and sold everyday for more than they are worth but in this listing the seller clearly states that the coin isn't genuine. And yet it still sold for $484. Is there something I'm missing? http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-S-VDB-WHEA...mQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item1e59b54acb
altered and slabbed It was NGC graded. If it was an altered coin, I suspect it wouldn't have been graded. At $484, it sounds like a good deal. Why the seller put that comment about the "S" being altered after being slabbed is a mystery to me.
Can you ever really determine what is going to happen on Ebay? It is almost like the worse the coin the better it does - not always, but sometimes to the extreme. I also do not see where this listing says NGC at all.
Ooops My mistake, I was looking at your avatar of a 1909SVDB and suffered a brain fart:headbang:. In that case, can the high bider return the coin as a fake? Again, I should have looked at the eBay link a 2nd time.
Eitheir theyre going to add it to their collection so they can get the coin for cheap, or more likely, they will flip the coin to an unsuspecting buyer. One of my customers once bought a 1931 "s" when I looked at it under a 10x the "mintmark" had been sodered on... He got it from a guy who got it off ebay Agh ebay the biggest coin scam around IMO
I would say it will most likely be re listed without the honesty of this seller. Look at the winning bidders fb number (1313) and then go the the sellers fb page and you will find him and see that he also sells Lincoln cents.
In the words of Albert Einstein - "There are two things which are infinite, the universe and the stupidity of people. And I'm not sure about the former."
Difficult to really see enough to detect any alteration but there is some kind of haze around the Mint mark. The seller only states the Mint mark is altered but doesn't say it's a fake. Very possibly some bidders are hoping that it is only an attempt to clean the Mint Mark and it is a real coin. Note he didn't say it's a fake, copy, altered coin, just the Mint Mark has been altered, not added. Or as already noted this coin may well end up back on ebay as the real thing. Odd there are so many bidders though. Also, note the return statement. quote: If after you receive the coins and are not satisfied, please contact me right away and I will work with you to try and solve any problems. Does NOT say can be returned. Not a good thing.
The winning bidder certainly has a lot of recent history with the seller. http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...1cent&sort=3&page=1&rows=50&completed=1&all=1
