    Hello Everyone,

My daughter is in high school and is taking classes that involve Ancient Greece, Rome and such. She loves the subject... loves the mystery, romance, mythology and every other aspect of that time in history.

I'd love to surprise her for her birthday (coming up in a couple of months) with some coins from that genre.

I've looked online... and I've read they old coins are commonly faked. I have NO idea or knowledge about older coins, and don't want to spend way too much on coin that should be cheap.. or just fooled on a fake.

Anyone have any good sites or resources for finding some common ancients?

    Thanks in advance!

I know little more than you do and have received wonderful advice from the folks here. I'm sure they will be chiming in as well.

Nice surprise for your daughter, BTW! ;-)

I second Vcoins. Their server has been down for the last day but hopefully that will soon be rectified.

I'd be happy to help with specific suggestions if you'd like. Just PM me with more details, like budget, specific eras or emperors, etc.

Lol! As TIF said, vcoins server is down at the moment. I think I broke it. I bought a coin yesterday and immediately after that I couldn't log in.

Also, check Forumancientcoins, numismall, bargainbinancients, and lots of good stuff on eBay, but ask the guys in the ancients forum before you buy anything on eBay.

There are lots of good sellers and sites. I agree with Vcoins being decent, but I find the prices usually high. No one has mentioned the largest seller in the world of ancients: www.cngcoins.com. Frank robinson has an auction clsoing in a couple of weeks, http://www.fsrcoin.com/a.html.

The suggestion to ask us is a good one, especially if ints not an auction.

Thank you all for your help and support on this. I have had a member of this forum contact me directly, and I think I will purchase a couple of coins from that member.

I will bookmark those sites you guys have mentioned for the future though.. I might just want to add one to my own personal collection in the future.

    Thanks again guys and gals!

    :)

A couple good ones mentioned but other online dealers like Harlan J Berk or Northeast also have some ancients. You can search them also.

One of the best things to do is to go to a large show with ancients. You really do need to see and handle a lot of ancients so you know what to expect when you are buying. I would suggest going to an ANA show, CICF, NYINC, or another really large show. Nothing beats seeing the coins in hand.
