    Hey Everyone,

I'm about to fly out to Newfoundland on Tuesday. I'm terrified of flying. :nailbiting:

So, I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice to calm my nerves on the flight.

Oh, and feel free to post any random sweet ancient coin.

Bring a good book, and don't look out the windows when you are in the air. Of course, bringing along some coins in the carry-on, perhaps ones you have yet to attribute, will help you out! Good luck and stay safe Erin!

As someone that's flown several times before, most I (and I'm sure others here as well) have to worry about are having to sit behind some jerk reclining their seat too far and/or being close to restless kids. Oh and the horribly long waits at the airport to pass through and board...

I apologize if this doesn't help, only just putting things into perspective based on my experiences flying.

I fly quite often. I have been on 4 international flights in the last 12 days. My advice is to check in online 24 hours before the flight. If they offer extra legroom seating such as exit rows, grab it. You might have to pay a few dollars extra but the flight is far more comfortable. Bring a device that plays your favourite calming music. Buy an eye mask and listen to the music. Before you know it you will be there.

    BTW...enjoy Newfoundland it is lovely.

Bring some generic low-strength meletonin gummys. Take one and ask the person beside you to wake you up at the end of the flight. Or take some good books and coins. Or make some busy work lists of coins you want, own, whatever!

No worries Erin flying is fun once you get used to it. I fly all the time for work and several times a year internationally.

I agree with @Orfew that upgrading to economy comfort or exit row is worth it. Get to the airport early and maybe grab a bite to eat and a stiff drink to loosen up if you're nervous. I always do ;)

Bring a neck pillow and some good headphones! I prefer window seats because I have an easier time leaning against the side to take naps. I think you will find that the earth viewed from above is actually quite beautiful.

Edit to add: On most international flights I've been on there is free movies/music and a map to let you know where you are :)

If you are not travelling alone, you can always hold someones hand. BUT remember on the decsent, you are NOT having a baby. There is no need for a deathgrip hold, nor screaming obscenties! Seriously, Erin, you will be absolutely fine :D

Apotropaic magic is intended to turn away harm or evil influences, as in deflecting misfortune or averting the evil eye. Among the Ancient Greeks the most widely used image intended to avert evil was that of the Gorgon. The Etruscan goddess Metus is congruent both with the Greek Medusa and with Deimos, the Greek god of terror.

This depiction of Metus will keep you away from harm and dread.

(This coin was sold in the 1957 sale of the Adolphe Menjou collection. He was a Hollywood actor and the best-dressed man in America. It is doubtful it ever belonged to him though.)

You really shouldn't be . . . Air travel is, in fact, one of the safer modes of transportation.
Hope you can relax and enjoy your trip.

As the ancients might have said "you are always in the Allfather's hand" Don't worry about it. It's safer than most other means of transportation.

You are much safer flying than you would be driving your car within a 25-mile radius of your home. If this doesn't settle your nerves, then just think how lucky you are that you weren't on the Challenger space shuttle 31 years ago.

I use to love to fly back when it was an adventure. My longest flight was Los Angeles to Copenhagen. It took just over 22 hours nonstop but flying over Greenland was spectacular. The ice cap was interesting but got boring.

Just try to relax and take a nap if you can. I don't like to drink in a situation like that because I don't like my mind to be dulled at all when I might need to use it. To me it's just better to relax and not worry about anything but the adventure and scenery. If your lucky you will be seated next to somebody who you can enjoy talking too. I tend to stay to myself unless somebody is friendly and wants to talk.

If you can ignore the quizzical looks from others on the plane, just stand up in the middle of the aisle and flap your arms like a bird and you'll feel like you're in complete control.

More seriously, I know several people who fear nothing more than flying, and I don't really know of anything that works really well . . . sorry, and good luck.

    Lol!

Thanks everybody! I'm feeling better about it.

I'll be travelling with my dad and brother. I'm really happy about that. I would never go alone.

I was thinking of bringing David Hendin's book with me because all of the coins on my wishlist are in there, lol. I'm hoping that they'll have some movies available too.

Part of my mental health issues relate to anxiety. So, I naturally tend to blow things out of proportion. But, you're all doing a great job of easing it.

    Thanks so much!

Honestly Erin when it comes to planes they're safer than the maniacs on the road.
I've been building planes for years. Not the whole plane but wings, flaps, fuselage ect.....
The strongest part is the wings so get a seat there, lol. Well not on the wings but ya know what I mean.
Coming down for me is the worst, ear pops because the preasure. Take off freaks people out for some reason.
Put the head phones on listen to some music or watch a flick. I usually just sleep the whole way.

Enjoy the ride and have a fun safe trip :D

Erin, throughout my career, I have around 5 million air miles under my belt. International and domestic North America travel (yeah, I have been all over your great nation many times. :) )

Most of what folks said in prior posts I agree with. I would add: drink plenty of non-caffeinated, NON-alcoholic drinks. Getting up to use the bathroom will help your legs' circulation, and it goes a LONG way towards alleviating jet-lag when you land. Alcohol will dry your system out, and caffeine messes with your internal clock when traveling. Has worked for me for over 37 years of international traveling on business.

Don't worry. You probably won't die. You're more likely to die in the car on the way to the airport.

Have a great trip, Erin! Atlantic Canada is beautiful!
The most dangerous part of the trip is driving to or from the airport. The odds of being in an air crash for someone who flies often is one in eleven million. Most importantly—You’re in GOoD hands!
