What would you have paid, I'll tell you what I paid later and should I get it certified??? There is a spot on it.. What would this be??
Small break in the luster...... Nice coin. I'd leave it be, to enjoy free of plastic entombment. The price to slab this coin far exceeds it's value.
Nicer than most of the proofs I see from that time. Based on my experience, many of the the proofs from the 80's and early 90's are covered in spots. Except for that tiny spot, your coin is very nice, maybe a 69, could go 68 due to the spot. I love the cameo...
So if I paid $4.00 for a quarter, If I choose to sell, I could make a profit??????? P. S. I'm a wheat gal
Almost all proof coins after 1973 are cameo and a great many are deep cameo. That's the way they were made. Cameos before 73 are the exception. An 86 S quarter is not a scarce or high value coin. Not worth a high premium unless you could get a 70 or maybe a 69 grade. Even with a 69 it probably wouldn't be worth the slabbing fees and this coin definitely can't get a 70. Certification is out of the question economically.
I wouldn't bother grading it, especially since it doesn't have a chance at PR70. A couple weeks ago I bought a PR70 of eBay for my 1986 set for $32. Cheapest one on there right now is $60 but cheaper ones are for sale pretty often.
It's very tough to accurately grade a proof coin from an image, but I see it more as a PR-67. Just put it in a nice protective holder of your choice and pass on the certification costs.
For an impulse buy, you didn't do too bad. 3,010,497 minted, which was average mintage for proofs during that time, up until 92 when the US mint started minting both silver and clad proofs. It's a nice looking proof. Those spots are common, they can be carbon spots from some one breathing or sneezing over it unptotected, or can happen other ways. I sell these for 1.99, think I'm out of 86s tho. Looking at ebay sold averages they go for around my BIN price. But...and this the most important but, if you like it, then you paid the right amount. 2 bucks over the average is not bad, you can't flip it, but it ain't bad. I'm a washington quarter guy and had a ton of fun buying all my clad proofs, some of the nicest coins I have, and I'll bet I overpaid on half of them, but who cares, I had to have them.
