I have a 1974 nickel that appears fine other than the markings. It doesn’t appear this was done by man- and I have someone that has come back to me 5 times trying to buy it $100 increments each time... anything??

No, it's not a mint error, it's just damaged.
    It's only worth five cents.

If you have an offer for $500, it might be time to accept it :)

    Welcome to Cointalk
If someone is offering that kind of money for that coin well obviously they know nothing about coins.

So I guess you would have to ask your self would you want it done to you. JMO

This is what a mint cancelled coin looks like.

That is a pretty common pattern found vice jaws, so not that unusual to have more than one with that pattern.
