I am struggling to collect Presidential and Native American (Sacagawea) Dollars

I enjoy collecting coins directly from circulation. It is cheap (I am a student) and it is fun to watch the holes in my Whitman folders slowly fill up. Having said that, I was excited to begin collecting the Native American dollars (and slightly excited about collecting the presidential series). Unlike some people, I like the Sacagawea design and find the coin appealling. However, I am having an incredibly difficult time finding these coins at banks. Yesterday, I went to five different bank and walked away from those banks with a total of 26 dollar coins. All of these were presidential dollars. The only Sacagawea coins I have are ones I purchase from the US Mint's Direct Ship Program. My question is this, "Where can I find Native American dollars?" (I have checked the local post offices but none of them have the stamp dispensing machines...)

Perhaps if you let others know the general vicinity where you live there may be a member or two who are familiar with your area.

The Native American dollar is produced solely for collector sales and the Direct Ship program. None of these coins have been ordered by the Federal Reserve, so the banks can't order them from the Fed either. The only way a bank will ever have Native American dollars is if the bank orders them from the Direct Ship program, or if a customer deposits them.

On the other hand, the Presidential dollars are available to banks through the Fed, so with a bit of hunting, you ought to be able to find a bank that has them (or that can be persuaded to order a box).

Thanks for explaining why I only receive Presidential dollars! Apparently, assembling a collection of Native American dollars may be more difficult than I had originally imagined....

Got 4 2009 native american dollars at the bank the other day. You just have to keep looking and sooner or later one will pop up. Trust me its frustrating but sooner or later it will pay off.

Thanks! I will definitely keep looking. I was just wondering...Do some vending machines return $1 coins as change??

I actually visited a coin shop today; however, they were selling the native american dollars for 2-4 dollars over face value. I couldn't bring myself to justify spending that much more than face. In addition, I like the challenge of trying to find them in circulation...Thanks for the response!

Some do. You have to find one that excepts $5's.

Some of the self-service check-out lines in grocery stores like Kroger give dollar coins in change. Also try automated car washes.

Birdman, are you collecting the entire series of Sacagawea, 2000-to date? You mentioned the Sac/Native American, but you didn't mention the original design with the soaring eagle reverse.

I am going to start by collecting the Native American dollars with the yearly changing reverse (2009-?) However, I anticipate that I may eventually expand into collection the whole series starting in 2000. From my understanding, the coins from 2002-2008 did not circulate...is that correct?

Kroger is a grocery store chain that can't compete with the better east coast stores in the larger markets, so they tend to concentrate on the smaller population markets.

I'm working on a business strike set, 2000-2008 P&D slabbed in MS68, so I ordered Mint Sets through 2004 and bags and rolls thereafter when the Mint went to the satin finish on the Mint Sets, but I seem to recall that some collectors reported getting rolls of the Sacs from banks during the period 2004-2006. I could be wrong.
