As a somewhat new collector, I think the answers to this question may be enlightening, especially based on the vast level of knowledge and wide degree of specialization I have seen from many of the posters here.

    OK, here is the scenario:

    1) You must start a new collection from scratch.
    2) You can spend $1,000.00 to get started.
    3) Each subsequent year you can spend $500.00 (adjusted upward for inflation as time goes on).

What would you buy? What would you hope to have your collection look like in 5, 10, or 20+ years of collecting based on this budget?

Irrelavent criteria for starting a collection. Collect what you want as you can get the coins. It's all about personal fun and enjoyment. :)

    Now, given your scenario...
1.) I'd put together a set of VF+ Winged Liberty Dimes (Mercs).
2.) I'd buy the 1916-D in the best grade, non-problem coin, PCGS or NGC certified coin.
3.) $500 a year for a VF+ set would be great. Melt on the coins is ~$3 right now. So, potentially, in the first year, I could have a complete set.
In 5 years, I'd have some nice pieces and have things upgraded. :)

BTW, this November will be the 1 Year mark for my Morgan set (link in my signature).

Vroomer - I know that the question is probably useless for any new collector. Also the scenario is incredibly arbitrary. I guess my main objective was to determine, if you had to start over, and didn't have all of your current resources, what "cheap" items would make you happiest?

That being said, I think the answer you gave was perfect.
