What do you guys generally find when searching nickels. I'm missing a lot of early nickels and I've been thinking about buying a case to try to fill some slots. I have all the war nickels in my collection so they aren't a priority (although silver is silver, and I'll take it wherever I can find it). I've searched halves before with little reward, and I still do it from time to time to fill books, but I'm looking to change things up a bit. Thanks!
I've only done like two boxes of nickels so far but I'm seeing tons of 60's, a nice amount of 50's, less 40's and maybe 1 30's so far if I recall correctly. No buffalos or V nickels for me yet.
I've never searched a whole box, only a few rolls at a time of Halves and other stuff, so usually i just rerolled them to take them back to the bank. What do you guys do with a whole box? Do you reroll them to return them, or do you just show up? Sorry for the noob question.
I reroll them. In my area you have to. in other areas they have coin machines so you just dump them in.
I JUST started searching rolls of nickels this February. I've purchased $20 worth three times now and each time have come away with something interesting -besides the typical half dozen 40s, 50s, and early 60s that are common in each bunch. On my first try, I found a near mint condition 1958, plus a 10 Centavos from Guatemala that is the same size as a US nickel. My second try turned up a nice surprise with a 1937 Buffalo in halfway decent shape! My third attempt found a nice 1938 and a much more worn 1944-P wartime Jefferson. So far, hunting nickels has been a lot more fun than hunting halves -though not as profitable. :smile
Well, looks like I might swing by the bank and buy a box tomorrow to search. I need a break from halfs... been pretty disappointed by the last set of rolls I got. Thanks!
I'm really liking nickels. If I ever start a collection of Proofs I think I will do the nickel. Roll searching boxes takes forever though!! Are any of you finds CWR to be better or worse than boxes when it comes to war and buffalo?
I've found some pretty awesome CWR of nickels. Wars and Buffs galore. But that has only happened twice, I think. Boxes also produce big hits, but you gotta do more volume.
I'll be sure to post what I find. Here's hoping for some good stuff (errors, war, buffs, and others)!
This is what i found in the bank boxes i went through today Box 1 4-39, 2-40, 1-41, 2-41D, 1-41, 2-46, 1-47S, 1-48, 1-51S, 1-53, 2-53D, 3-54D, 2-56D, 2-57, 2-57D, 1-58 (AU), 3-58D, 1-59, 3-59D, 1-95S, 1-03S, 2-Canadian Nickels, 1- Singapore c20 Box 2 1-36 Buffalo, 1-38, 1-41D, 1-42, 1-46, 1-46D, 1-47, 1-48, 1-48D, 1-49, 1-Canadian Nickel I usually go through the box quickly and pull out all of the old stuff, foreign and BU's and then go back when i have time and look for errors / varieties / FS. I keep all the nickels i get.
Nickels are my favorite to do, but not as potentially profitable as a good box of halves, and take me forever. I've only done about 20 boxes in the past year. I've found a about 17 war nickels, only 1 Buff (dateless & blackened), and a handful of foreign. I have 11 spots to go for my Whitman 38-61 folder. The best key-date I've found is the 1938-D. They are a lot of fun, but take quite awhile. I hold onto anythng pre-1960 as well, or proofs. I then sort out the lower mint pre-60s (anything lower than 50 M and I give the rest to my mom). Have fun!
I'm excited about my bank trip today. Gonna run out this afternoon and grab a box of Nics, maybe some halves (I still have holes to fill) and then ship off some trades. I will post the results today for what I get searched. I'm sure it will take a while.
Wow, three to five a week is a lot. I hope the Nics turn out better than the halves I picked up today.
Picked up a box and went through it in the same night. Found a lot of nice fillers for my new book and 4 awesome silver nickels! =D I also picked up a box of dimes, but I didn't find a single thing in it. =(
Nickels are pretty fun to do. I've only done 17 boxes total, but here's my finds: 3 Buff 16 war nicks 8 modern foreign 2 proofs 14 1938-39 and of course, tons of 40s and 50s. Though I only save 1953 and earlier.
I grabbed 4 boxes of Nickels today. Here's the breakdown. Box 1 28 pre-1960 2 Canadians Box 2 38 pre-1960 2 Canadians Box 3 36 pre-1960 1 Dateless Buff! 1 Canadian 1 Swiss 20 Rappen Box 4 Haven't opened yet. So I've gone 3 boxes in a row without any silver! That's the most Nickel boxes I've gone with getting skunked. I was glad to grab the Buff though, this is my 2nd Buff I've ever found. Looks better than the other one but dateless. Also in those 3 boxes I found no fillers for my Whitman either... Nice box you had jbyers! I've had one Nickel box in the past that produced that many.
