i was thinking of buying a metal detector to see if i could get lucky and get some good coins from under ground, i live in colorado and really dont know the laws about digging in parks or on ghost towns. if coins are under ground for 100 years are they still in good shap or not.

It depends on the soil composition, climate, and type of coin. Some coins would be very well-preserved, others would be corroded beyond identification. I've seen many decent looking coins that have been dug from the ground.

Let us know what you find.

    Good luck!

Depending on condition it could be worth quite a bit according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins 20th Century 35th Ed.

600,000 of the bronze US half-dollar size coins were minted at the Hamburg Mint in Germany that year, including an unspecified number of proofs, for use in German East Africa (modern-day Tanganyika). The monetary system consisted of 100 Heller to the Rupie.

Catalog values are $20 Fine, $45 Very Fine, $85 Extra Fine, $550 Uncirculated, $650 Brilliant Uncirculated, and $1,200 Proof.

Batte - Welcome to Coin Talk, but you really should have started a new thread with your inquiry instead of hijacking one on a completely different subject.

i LOVE metal detecting. I would be doing it right now if it weren't so cold...the ground is hard as a rock, I'm sure. which means the detector should pick up even deeper things...dang. i wish i lived near a beach. or on an old old property.

Better check real carefully about detecting anywhere in a state park, I know federal parks it's a HUGE no-no, many state parks as well.

In many jurisdictions it can be a felony, ask first before you get in huge trouble.

You can go to FMDAC.org and check your state for info.

Thanks for a reply but now I think I must rephrase my question and make it clear.
Where and who can be the buyers of that coin I told you about in earlier question, how can I get in touch with them - buyers?

    Yours,

According to the Krause catlog the coin you ask about varies in value from $20 in F grade to $650 in BU grade. But if you found this coin in the ground it is a pretty safe bet it is worth less than $20.

If you want to sell it put it up on ebay.

You are very unlikely to find coins valuable enough to pay for the metal detector.

I would have to agree with Cloudsweeper on that one, you very seldom find any coins in the ground that would be worth anything. Time has a way of destroying the value of these coins. Here are two examples of what I am talking about.
the are two Indian Head cents I found one is a 1887 the other is a 1907.

Where do you live in Colorado? I live in Colorado Springs. If you live anywhere near me maybe we could go detecting together sometime. Drop me a note.

Hobo posted a great thread describing his visit to the Dahlonega Branch Mint. It might be fun to metal detect in that old neighborhood!

    Very best regards,

I was thinking the same thing yesterday while I was there. I think I even mentioned that to my aunt. Wouldn't it be GREAT to find a D mint gold coin in Dahlonega?

    Funny that you mentioned Dahlonega.

I met with a coin dealer yesterday, and he told me that he had worked for a company, years ago that built a factory ovr the site of the old mint.

Before they started a bunch of his guys detected the property.

    They found nothing! Nada.
