my father just passed away and mom and i were going through the safe looking for insurance papers, we found hundreds of coins, some from the late 1800s and many from the early 1900s, mom said she new there were some coins in there but she didnt know what they were, we bought a book to decipher some of them but it extreemly hard to determine what they all are, plus ther some not listed in the book, like a 2 headed penny from 1943 i think, and all sorts of paper money and silever dollars, 1/2 dimes and the sort, is there anything i need to look for or should i take them somewhere to have them checked, if so where would i go, who to trust? i also know there are many star note bills in this group. thanks in advance for any help.
You have several options. The easiest by far is to take your collection to a local dealer for assistence. If you have no idea of the values, I would suggest that you not sell any item at that time. Most dealers charge a nominal fee for this service. It will at least give you an idea of what you have and an approximate value. Once you have this information, you can look up the values in a leading publication. These values will give retail prices, so you can adjust the price about 30% for sale to a dealer. A coin collecting club will also be of some help to you. Many collectors are well versed in this wonderful hobby. There are many available online. Good luck. Remember that education is the key.
