Why would one do this? They must have had no knowledge, a little sad. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Washington-Quarter-1979-D-PCGS-MS-63_W0QQitemZ360149768074QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item360149768074&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1318 It's worth $1.15 on numismedia...
Well first I would not quote numismedia prices - it is probably high. There are dealers that send in hundreds or thousands of coins to be graded - or someone like my father to fill out an order, or maybe they sent in mint set - of course the exact reson why someone sent this one in will always be a mystery. And now someone else is trying to make extra money on it - well if someone buys it at least it is in a PCGS holder.
WTH? I would have at least picked out a nice one to send in....in fact, I would have to have deemed it nearly flawless to be worth the expense and trouble for that year/mint. The only thing I could think is that it was a "test" piece sent for some scientific purpose for which it no longer serves. Perhaps they thought the goldish toning was something special?
Dont forget about grading sets folks, many do this. I have slabbed many a circ VDB for folks building these.....cost be darned, they want that grading set. Most do it with better dates tho.
