A metal detectorist in Britain has discovered one of the largest caches of ancient gold coins. 'Largest ever' hoard of iron age gold coins unearthed by a treasure hunter using a metal detector In Britain finds like this must be reported as "treasure trove". A value of the find is determined and half is paid to the finder and half to the land owner. The artifacts are then placed in a museum (or otherwise disposed of).
Incredible! what an exciting find. Thank you for pointing this out. Seems to happen often in Britain. Or maybe, it just gets reported more in the UK due to the sensible laws the Brits have with respect to metal detecting finds.
It would be interesting to know if most or all of the coins were struck from the same dies and if they were struck at a portable mint that travelled with the band.
That can be the fascinating aspect of this large sized cache, surely there are variations on coins and dies.
What a stash! I wonder how it got there and who put it there? Now the historians have their work cut out for them! Thanks for sharing this with us! :thumb: Ribbit
The man who found this huge cache has told the story of how he found the cache. This is a great story. He researched an area to metal detect for 16th century artifacts but he stumbled across this hoard of ancient gold coins. He found a single gold coin at the end of a cold day and could not return for a week because he had to work. He found 8 more coins his second day of detecting and 774 coins the next day. That's when he notified authorities of his find. Metal detector unearths £570k Dallinghoo Gold
