Better than NGC's terrible white normal look. Because they were being sold in 2017 and they didn't have the 2018 yet so NGC put a 2017 in for their display coin during their pre-sale show
It gives us a rare insight into the NGC mindset. The profiteering shows that at the end of the day the TPGs are businesses. We should always remember that in regards to credibility. It explains why every so often the standards change, and why they have gone from graders to appraisers in regards to market grading. FWIW, PCGS is no better.
That’s not really what I was saying, although I might understand how you can simplify what I said into that. My point was that it shows that they are in the end, businesses, and profitability will always come into their plans. The need to make a profit explains many more of their actions apart from special slab labels and colors. That’s what I said.
Of course they’re a business which is why they do the special labels and slabs and offer picture services ect as value adders. The need to make a profit does not explain anything else though. There is no shortage of coins for them to grade. They could survive off off the Moderns of each year if they had too. World coins will keep them busy for many decades if not longer. There’s always gonna be some dealers and collectors cracking coins out for whatever reason as well that’ll get resubmitted at some point. Grading changes over time, it always has and always will. They aren’t minuplating it hoping for an extra resubmission that’s just what people think when they have the belief grading is scientific and isn’t subjective which it is. At the end of the day they’re only a business BECAUSE of their credibility.
Pretty sure these labels were made exclusively for HSN. Regardless of how contract lawyers define it, associating their company’s name with HSN cheapens their name (to me of course).
They're exploiting a market niche, and as most business folks do, it's their very right. We try to call these little 'incursions' out on this forum, but we ain't linked in any way to the folks that should be doing their 'homework' ahead of time. Then, again, there's folks who genuinely like to collect these items, but I urge them to do so for collectors sake alone. No way these items are gonna triple in value down the road.
They were exclusive just as the other labels are exclusive to those submitters. That’s not a partnership and the grading companies shouldn’t be discriminating against who can submit just because some people don’t like them. I’m not a big fan of NGC but there’s not reason to be critical of them for grading coins that end up on HSN.
I’ve always been a fan of people learning to grade for themselves and using TPGs as exactly what they are an expert “opinion”
