How would you spend $2000 on coins?

Let's suppose an obscure but generous uncle passed away and left you $2000 in his will with the stipulation that it only be spent on coins.

Would you buy...

1) One $2000 coin.
2) Ten $200 coins.
3) One hundred $20 coins.

Please vote.

PS - I would choose ten $200 coins.

Well my Roosevelt set is almost complete and none of the coins can be bought for under $200 so I voted for the one for $2000.

I already now which one I would get. 1950 NGC PF67UC or 1951 NGC PF68UC

 

My Roosevelt and Jefferson sets have lots of missing common date coins. Since I'm more than happy with PR69DCAM and MS65 coins I'd get a big pile of new stuff.

 

My choice would be a $20 St. Gaudens double eagle graded and slabbed.

 

There is one option you failed to include, and that is the one I would use. Since your uncle didn't specify any particular coin(s), I would opt for 4 - $500 boxes of half dollars to search, and I would keep searching more boxes until I had converted all 4000 coins to either 90% or 40% silver halves.

For the sake of discussion, let's assume that 20% of the coins (800) were 90% silver and 80% (3200) were 40% silver. Also, let's assume that silver is selling at $18oz.

800 x .36169 = 289.352oz.
3200 x .1479 = 473.28oz.

289.352 + 473.28 = 762.632oz. x $18 = $13,727.38

Okay, for the final assumption, let's say that you sell them to a dealer at 20% back of spot.

$13,727.38 x 80% = $10,981.90

Then, I would buy a nice 1879-CC Morgan in MS64 for about $8K and use the remaining $2,900 to start searching more boxes of half dollars.

This might take some time to accomplish and I might even drive to many different banks in a 150-mile radius, but it would sure be a lot of fun.

I picked 10 $200 coins. Still a few slots I could fill/upgrade in upper mid grade with that.

 

None of the above.
I would go for some IHC's to fill in holes.
$2000 would be good for about 3 or 4.
I'm shooting for MS-63 BN.

 

Apart of me would buy 1 x $2000 coin (i.e 1909 S VDB Lincoln) but then again I could buy 10 x 200 coins to help me get closer to finishing my lincoln cent collection lol.

 

I don't have anything better to do with my time, so it would depend on how many banks I'd want to hit in a week.

Either a few 1794 cents in the $300 to $600 range or try and find a really cruddy 1793 S-1 for $2000.

I voted for ten $200s but it's really more like five $400s, which would plug a few holes in my Kennedy set. Or else I would try to buy a few really top-notch Conder tokens/maybe even one-two in silver if the price was right.

 

Ooh Conders in silver, tough pieces. I've only got three of them. (Most off metal Conders are rare. In addition to my silver I have three in white metal, one in Bartons metal, and an unlisted piece in tin.)

 

One 1oz platinum bullion coin and the rest silver.

 

I bet you guys can't guess what coin is missing from my Merc set... I think 2000 will get me close.

There is one coin that resides in my dealer's case. Assuming that it hasn't sold, it could be mine for $1,800.

My answer is one coin & $200 in change.
