I received this coin this week. Any thoughts on how this 1935 Hudson Half would grade based on these pix?
Assuming the marks on the lower right side of the lower middle sail isn't wear, then it looks like about MS65 dipped. Otherwise it's a very good AU coin. The light is funny so it would be helpful to have other photos. Please keep in mind that I'm not a particularly good grader. That's my best estimate.
The sails are clean, no wear. The shadowing on the sail is an artifact of the photo. The coin has a creamy luster that doesn't translate well in photos. I'm not 100% sure it was dipped (though I understand the instinct to say that.) It was stored in tarnish resistant tissue. I haven't heard of this before I got this coin, but maybe some else on the boards has.
Well because the picture does no justice to this coin I will say at least MS65. This coin might be higher because I see no hits or distracting marks what so ever. Please look close for any issue and post them or try a get better pics for viewing. Very nice commemorative only 10,008 minted so handle with care. Care to share what you paid for it? Allen
Awesome coin! I'd agree with the above grading - even with less than perfect photos it looks amazing!
Based solely upon the surviving populations, the odds are strongly against the coin grading above MS65. Add to that the fact that the images don't allow for a really good look at the coin and that it appears dull/lackluster. It could grade anywhere between high grade AU and MS64+.
Thanks for the input. I'm sending it off to get certified. I'll get some better photos and let you know what the TPGs think when it comes back.
I'd give it a ms-64/ms-65. It has not hits or distracting marks, at least the photos that I have looking at. I don't think it has been cleaned or dipped, but I do agree it is hard to tell what the luster is like by these photos. It might be a good coin to send to a TPG. It would give us one more opinion of the grade.
