I can't say I've seen a FEC with a cud before... Neat! I'd net grade it around VF, maybe XF depending on what it looks like in-hand. Cool coin regardless of grade & thanks for sharing it...Mike
I think what your seeing is a nice die clash there Leadfoot, it follows the periphery quite a bit, and I think I can see some wreath there as well !! EDIT: Could you post a pic of the reverse as well? You have a very interesting coin there !!
I would say it is a high VF Another question from a guy that started collecting again after a 35 year break. What is a cud?
Welcome back !! A cud is a broken die that leaves a standing blob of metal at the rim, it can be on either side of the coin. I don't think this is a cud tho. This is a cud:
Very nice coin! I would grade it VF but it looks to have been cleaned at one time. I would say that's a die clash. Lou
I don't think it is a cud either, it looks like there is someything on the 2 X 2. If you can take it out of the 2 X 2 and post a pic of the obverse and reverse and we can give you a better opinion. As it stand VF 20 at best.
IMO it is a EX 40. The feathers still have plenty of detail to make this a nice example of a Flying Eagle cent. It has a few different things going on at 1 o'clock thru 4 o'clock with the denticles and at about 8 to 11 o'clock. This is a very interesting piece that I'd send to Rick Snow of Eagle Eye Rare Coins. For a $4 fee plus postage & insurance you'll get a professional and honest explanation of what's going on here with this coin. Check out his website here. http://indiancent.com/ Bruce
it is a retained cud. the reverse displays weakness on the rim [7-8 o'clock] opposite the obverse. very cool example with clashes and retained cud.
I think this coin is xf40. Also could this be FS1c-004? I can't really see the picture in the cherry pickers guide that I have. It also could be a snow 7. Maybe someone can get Rick Snow to take a look.
I found this example - http://www.indiancent.com/market/57s7c35a.jpg. Does it match? Looks like it to me - maybe a snow 7.
