How would you grade this 1803 cent?

    Happy New Year!

This is my first attempt at photographing a coin with my digital SLR camera. I definitely need to work on it a bit.

Anyway, here is an 1803 cent from my collection. What grade would you give it? What Sheldon type does it fall under?

    Thanks!

    Jonathan

Looks like a nice old large cent! But we'll need better photos.

    Based on the pictures, I'd give the reverse a G-6, the obverse a VG-8... Perhaps a g-7?

Just curious, what camera/lens are you using?

    Hi.

Here are some larger photos of the 1803 cent.

I am using a Canon Digital Rebel XT with a Canon 18-55mm EFS lens. I am new to SLRs, so as for now I have the camera set to "Full Auto". I need to experiment with the aperture settings, etc., to take better macros. All in good time.

    Thanks everyone.

Thanks again for the comments, everyone.

What do you think of the variety? Large or small date? Large or small fraction? It is obviously not a stemless wreath variety.

    If I may:

I would grade the coin VG Details due to the corrosion. Remembering that it is very difficult to find these without corrosion.

With that said, nice specimen of an early example and not cheap either I might add! :thumb:

Large date, small fraction is my guess from the fuzzy pix. But I can't really tell about the date. Describe the top serif of the 3. Does it have a vertical bar that extends above and below the horizontal top of the 3? If so, it's a large date. If it just has a vertical bar that extends only below the horizontal top it is a small date.

Here is another attempt to photograph the coin -- in particular the date. I still need to figure out the macro settings.

Some photos lead me to believe it is a large date; others that it is a small date. The coin has corrosion, which doesn't make the task easier for me.

Here are the photos, and thanks again.

    Sounds about right :thumb:

If I had to guess, I would say S-247.

No way. If I could get this cat to stop sitting in my arms I might be able to handle that attribution for you.

OK got rid of the cat for a moment.....Yakpoo has it right I think. I come up with S-247 as well.

Glad it got sorted out. I struggled with date, as I said.
