Hi, I'm new to collecting and have a question or two about the coin in the picture below. Ive come across several pennies in the last couple of weeks that look like the one in the picture. My question is what is the correct terminology to describe this coin? Is this something I should hang on to or is it pretty common? Bad or Good? It looks to me like blistering of some kind but i really have no idea. What do you guys think?
I´m not sure that gas bubbles in the planchet would be so severe over a large eria I´m going for acid or cemical post mint damage. But there will be others who will know for sure.
"Goose pimples" (what I call them) are very common on copper-plated zinc pennies from the 80's and probably stem from the copper-plating process and/or reaction of the zinc. Not post-mint damage, but probably nothing to write home about either. If they do have any significant value, then I'll be rich!
I figured it was a common ailment. lol. I would really like to know if anyone can tell me the technical term for this. Surely it has a name. "Goose pimples" are pretty close though. Its hard to look something up on the net when you don't know how to describe it. Thanks for your replies.
I've used the term pimples to describe raised bumps on coins like that for years. But with these plated cents, I think the correct term is corrosion bubbles.
"Bubbles" is also an acceptable term as long as your not referring to MJ's monkey in the same sentences. "Pimped" can also be made to work as well... example would be; "My penny got pimped, does it lose value?", "Indeed it could! Bubbles can deteriorate the luster"
