The first one is already graded. The second one is submitted for grading and pending return.. Care to take a guess at what the 1st is graded and the what the 2nd one will get graded as ? also have a couple more pending return that I'll post in another thread to see how our finely tuned our forum pcgs grading estimates are....
From what I can see, I'd call 'em both AU-55. I see what appears to be a slight bit of wear on the cheek on both coins. First coin appears to show a bit of blending of the wheat lines, but I don't think enough to drop it out of AU. Both coins have significant contact marks consistent with AU grades.
The bottom has a weaker strike but it has a chance of coming back MS-63 or 64. There aren't too man marks, and the fields look fairly clean.
The first one probably graded 63/64 brown. Maybe it is the picture, but it appears to lack luster. The second one I think would go 64 with an outside shot at 65 - again depending on what is going on on the back of Abe's head.
aside comments are always welcome,, however, please submit your "final answer" for each example if you would. There will be a re-cap and review in ~15 working days and test results require 1 answer. I'll try make the review as colorful as possible, so thick skins should we worn. submit your answers on the examples in the other thread also. I want to know who the best pcgs grading estimator in this forum is ! I bet others in the forum do also..... come on penny lady rlm is close to his "final answer",, he, you, lostdutch, cat-dog (doug and mike), and other moderators.... speak'wit finality... and let the best estimator win. Also, we all are aware of the limits of grading off of pics,, it's given, no need to comment......... just post a grade for each and let's see who's best (or luckiest) on this submission and the 2 others I've posted......
58 on the first. The second one - based on those pics I gotta say to gets body-bagged. A Genuine slab at best. Coin looks to have been whizzed and re-toned.
Easy - I will take a shot - based off your pictures I am going to say AU-58 first coin - looks like a touch of wear on right top wheat stalk. And on the second coin I am going to agree with Doug on this - for some reason when I blow up the picture I do not have a good feel for the color. I see it looks like it was struck with worn dies, but still in my opinion PCGS Genuine holder. PS - I don't need thick skin. If I graded wrong it was either because of your pictures or the other alternative - PCGS is wrong.
pcgs has returned these... results are in.. bumpting to give any last minute folks an opportunity to check in.......... penny lady,,, penny guy.. mike,,,, your absence is noted as you all are preceived pro's in tis arena.. what say thee ? compiled results in the near future,, as they say, keep quite and appear ignorent, or speak up and prove your ignorance ; )
These are generally well struck in MS. The first coin shows wear on the obverse hair above ear, cheek and jaw. Looks to be a slight rub on the wheats too. AU-55 The second coin looks to be about MS-64/65 RB. Looks like a LDS, interesting. SWEEEEEET coin!!!! I love it!
I thought that they might have been the same coin with different lighting, but assuming that they are not, the first is AU-55, has some wear and too many bag marks to grade any better. The second one is cleaned and re-toned so the TPG would no grade it or genuine it.
I'll grade the posters as follows: absolute value of actual grade less posted grade.. cumulative between the 4 coins I have posted in this forum. Any BB projections or BB results less posted grade will be graded as a max of delta 10 points if incorrect... so your max point loss for bidding a BB vs a MS64 is 10 pts.. and vise versa.
Here are the results of the PCGS grading survey. First some notable non-participants. Sometimes it's best to maintain you aura of expertise by sitting in the dugout. Penny lady Penny guy Dutchman .... too much downside to speaking up and being wrong I guess. I'd be quite too if I was a dealer instead of a dumb ol' collector. On to the rankings of those who stepped up and took a turn at the plate. Congratulations to all of you who chose to speak up and give it a shot. I will list the rankings from worst to best. 17 folks put in opinions. Only 6 of those offered up opinions on all 4 coins listed in the two threads.. so i'll list these 6 within thier own group. I'd describe these folks as willing to offer opinions and help collectors freely and openly with no hesitation... all good guys imo. Now lets beat them down abit PCGS grades: 1909s vdb > came back VF20 1913 > came back BB, questionable color.... dang that was a pretty blue too. 1931D > the first one listed was MS63 1931D > came back MS64 BN.... somewhat under what I thought, guessing LDS too off some points. 6 - edited BORGAVAN - averaged 8.75 points off of PCGS grades. 09s vdb - 8 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, didn't call the BB 31d - 8 pts off 31d - 9 pts off POOR PCGS grader. 5 - MIKE NOODLE - averaged 8.25 points off of the PCGS grades. 09s vdb - 5 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, didn't call the BB 31d - 8 pts off 31d - 10 pts off, called a MS64 a BB POOR PCGS grader 4 - MARK H - averaged 7.5 pts off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 5 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, didn't call the BB 31d - 5 pts off 31d - 10 pts off, called the MS64 a BB POOR PCGS grader 3 - GDJMSP - averaged 6.25 points off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 10 pts off, called VF20 a BB 13 - 0 pts off 31d - 5 pts off 31d - 10 pts off, called a MS64 a BB POOR PCGS grader Now we're up to what I'd call the best 2 of the 17. They both replied to all queries regarding a PCGS grade, and they both came back with reliable and close approximations as to what PCGS would grade these cents based on pictures within the threads... these guys I'd listen too folks,,, at least when it comes to what a cent will grade at PCGS, these two appear to be the best....... 2 - RLM's CENT - averaged 3.75 points off PCGS grades. I guess the name says it all, this guy knows cents, and shares knowledge readily. 09s vdb - 5 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, called a BB a MS64.... can't really blame him, I'd have said same. 31d - 0 pts off, nailed the MS63 31d - 0 pts off, nailed the MS64 SOLID PCGS grader #1 - DUKE KAVANGH - averaged 2.5 points off PCGS grades. Outstanding DUKE ! 09s vdb - 0 pts off, nailed the VF20 13 - 10 pts off, called a BB a MS... again, can't blame him on this coin. tough call. 31D - 1 pt off 31D - 0 pts off, nailed the MS64 OUTSTANDING PCGS grader Again, thank all of the above 6 forum members,, each readily provided thier opinion regarding a query for estimated PCGS grade, and each provided an opinion for each coin listed. Good guys, all of em'. Now on to the 11 members who chose to answer only a subset of the 4 coins listed.... or offered off hand comments and a thrown in grade here and there. Good stuff, but less reliable sources for grade estimations within this forum. From worst to best in this class: 11 - SHOEWRECKY edited - averaged 10 points off PCGS grade 09s vdb - 10 pts off, called a VF20 a BB 10 - COPPERWIRED - really honest grades IMO, but the numbers put you in the cellar 09s vdb - 8 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, called a BB a MS63 31D - 5 pts off 9 - ABE - averaged 7.5pts off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 5 pts off 13 - 10 pts off, called a BB a MS64 8 - BG COINS - averaged 5 pts off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 0 pts off, nailed the VF20 13 - 10 pts off, called a BB a MS64 7 - 2 CENT RICK - averaged 5 pts off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 10 pts off, called a VF20 a BB 13 - 0 pts off, nailed the BB 6 - WASHQUARTJESSIE - averaged 4.5 pts off PCGS grades 31D - 8 pts off 31d - 1 pt off 5 - BADTHAD - averaged 4 pts off PCGS grades 31d - 0 pts off, nailed the MS64 31d - 8 pts off 4 - COINKEEPER - averaged 1 pt off PCGS grades 31d - 1 pt off 1 - DESERTGEM - 0 pts off pcgs grades 09s vdb - nailed it - LDHAIR - 0 pts off pcgs grades 31d - nailed it 31d - nailed it - MPCUSA - 0 pts off pcgs grades 13 - called the BB THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS,,, SOMETHING TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU GET OPINIONS BACK REGARDING HOW A COIN WILL POTENTIALLY GRADE AT PCGS...... Based on this little experiment I'll be paying particular attention to what the following folks have to say : *** DUKE KAVANGH & RLM'S CENT *** The rest,,, we'll I'd be happy to buy em' a beer and BS with them all day,,, but wouldn't bank too much if the topic ran across PCGS grades for any pocket coins that hit the bar table.
