How do y'all store your mint wrapped coins? I put mine in those zip-lock vacuum seal bags, the only problem is that they don't hold their seal that well. Any ideas on how to store them so they will not tone/ stay protected? Thanks
I keep almost all of mine in 2x2 flips but for the ones that I don't want to tone. I place in airtites. There are many mfg of these and they cost a bit over a dollar each so you want to make sure you're not wasting any money. Incidentally I don't have many in airtites. you decide http://www.air-tites.com/
I use air-tites too, but these are in mint wrappers; i ordered these online from the mint and i don't want to take the coins out of their wrappers.
When you say wrappers do you mean paper coin rolls ? I ask because paper rolls are a bad storage medium. The paper contains sulphur and coins react to sulphur and will tone over time, pretty much regardless of anything else you do. If you want to prevent toning then the coins have to be removed from the rolls and stored individually in proper holders and under proper storage conditions.
.......i agree with doug. the problem with the roll storage is you have to decide if the 'special' wrapper (in some cases alleged) carries more weight when you want to sell them.
It's basically true that paper wrapped coins are destined for a poor future. If you have rolls of them, I suggest you invest in those plastic rolls and place the coins in those. If you really want to make them last, seal the tops with some clear tape so no air can get in. If you really want to do a great job, then put thoes taped shut plastic tubes in a Zip Lock bags, push out as much air as possible, use an iron on a really low setting and seal the ends of the plastic bag. Of course you could also purchase some liquid plastic and just pour it all over those coins. :goofer: See these will always look the same.
I use food saver bags. If you go through the expense of buying mint wrapped rolls, it would be throwing money away to open them up and transfer them to plastic tubes.
Is it also not throwing money away to allow the coins to sit in sulphur laden paper until they become ugly from unsightly toning, spotting and possible corrosion ? When you buy coins from the mint, are you buying the coins - or are you buying the paper wrapper ?
Doug 100% right Paper will color copper fast!!! I went all out about 2 year ago and got all square ploy holders like your AME's are stored & a air dryer system. So far it has work well. here in the south the humidity jumps from 1 day to the next
Note for storing for a long time, no air or other substances that could and do effect the metal of a coin is not a good idea. Regardless of what the paper is made of, Sulfur or not, paper is a product of wood and different glues. Much paper today is produced from paper used for other products and is what is called recycled. These products also contain substances that hold the pulp together. Normally not toxic to people but could and usually does effect metals. Unfortuately not all chemical reactions require air, moisture and not even Oxygen. This means your coins in a saver plastic bag may have little effects on hindering a chemical reaction to the coins with the paper.
Thanx for the hint. You might be a relative, JC. Here be some of the family stash abandoned about 40 years ago that I've found. Almost as good as my '43 steelies I purchased pretty clean PVC holders for in the mid~50's. Thoses I hacksawed out this year because the tubes seemed to have shrunk while stored in bad places until I returned to reclaim. Prior Proper Prep Prevents P Poor performance. (You could say "P" in the '50's, right?)
Sorry to say I made many coin filled items back in the 50's. I used to make them and give the to girls for presents I knew no one else could come up with. Letter openers full of coins always were a biggy. Pen holders, like the one shown, were also great for any girl with a desk job. There used to be a liquid plastic sold everywhere for hobbiest. I think it was something called decopaging or something like that. I used it make all sorts of items with coins inside. For all I know back then I may have used a 55 Double Die Cent for one of thoes silly items. OH, yeah. One more thing. It did work. I married one of those girls.
Doug, Like most of us on this board, I purchased several LINCOLN 2-ROLL "PRESIDENCY" cents. Per your suggestion, I will remove them from the original mint wrapped rolls. However, because of the volume of cents involved, can you recommend any non-PVC tubes I can purchase for storage rather than individually storing them in the 2X2's? If yes, where can I buy the non-PVC tubes? In my case it is the storage space issue. As usual, thanks for your guidance! Al
Not that I am Doug, but here is where I get mine. They are fast and no problem supplier. http://www.jpscorner.com/Square_Coin_Tubes.htm Jim
